First off Mercury is not in nuetral or reverse. To my knowledge they are the only Outboard manufacturer that still has a racing line of outboards. Whether you consider them top of the line or not it is a fact. And they still produce other outboards everyday. You E- Tech guys are doing nothing different than any of the Mercury guys or Yamaha guys or OMC guys have been doing for years in the past to thier fishing motors. So as for who is taking us there I will say it again, Mercury is the only one that still produces a racing outboard line even though their committment is not as strong as it has been in the past. And their inboard racing engines are second to none. The Mercury guys still use the 2.5 stuff because it is more readily available and there are more options for it than the newer stuff. You can still buy a brand new 300 drag or 280 power head from Mercury today. It's pricey but still available.Eventually the Mercury guys will have to start messing with the newer stuff and it has just as much potiential if not more than the E-Tech being they are already race outboards to start with. A lot of racers have a lot of $$$$ tied up in 2.5 stuff and it's a lot more sensible to stay with what you have rather than start all over, especially when the 2.5 stuff performs like it does. But eventually it will get harder to come by and people will start with newer stuff just like the E-Tech guys had to.I am a Mercury fan and owner and probably always will be. I have stockpiled enough Merc stuff to hopefully last me the rest of my life and I still pick up stuff when I can.I don't race ( other than the occasional river race at the local hangout)so my stuff last a good while. As for the E-Tech guys ,I hope you suceed. Competition is great and presents more options especially to people just getting into this sport. But you can't deny Mercury Racings past and sure as hell can't count out their future. Hope everybody has a safe and fun weekend!

First off sorry to hear of your father's medical issues.
Secondly very interesting thread. Way to keep the interest up Mark.
I wonder how long it will be until someone straps a big block Merc to a race ready boat and takes it out to the island. In theory, it should have the same restrictions as far as weight, etc as the 3.4 litre etec does. I think that would be a more fair comparison and I for one would be really interested to see the results since these by and large people are able to buy and that we'll most likely see in the future.
I have a question for the green motor experts. E-tec's biggest hp motor as far as I can tell is the HO 250 unless the regular 300 would be better (I suspect the lower unit on the HO is more appropriate). What base motor is Brent's using on this new boat and on the other boat(s) he runs at Blarney? I know he said he cut the heads are there any other mods that he has done to the motor?
Mercury's biggest horsepower green motor is the Optimax Pro XS 250 3.0 litre. Is anyone aware of someone running this motor in a drag racing scenario?Half B - Just one more project away from the promised land.

I don't know. Rich told me that it was his special hydraulic fluid container. I asked him why the hoses ran up under the motor cover, but he wasn't able to answer that one.
All I have to say is I had a great time because it was the first time in a long time that I got to watch a race, do an inspection and wasn't physically threatened by anybody after the race. It's early in the season though and no points were on the line....we'll see what people say in August!Sam Baker
On to the next project....

Brett i am sorry to hear about your dad, thats rough, mine are gettin old and i hate seeing it....But i am proud of what you and thE guys have done, but you understand where i am cummin at with fudgin rules, been around this money pit sport to long, but when the E boys start talkin how fast i cant resist...Your boat looks great i was at the island last night and didnt get over to the E side to look, figured you might think i am a spy for merc..he he For the new motors out i always said if Yamha wanted the fame it would be,but they make to much elsewhere i guess,The problem with the sport is money for an average guy,it would be nearly 70 grand new for a pro gas set up to run in the 9s,where my son kids me, he can run 9s on a stock motorcycle for under 10 grand, and ride it to work daily...Heck for what i have spent on merc parts in my time along with other people they could of a least had a yearly party like Blarneys, over priced dinasour tecnology, but it worked, like i said if yamaha wanted it,i am sure they would of takin it...Now you need about 3 thousand more rpms to run pro gas and lots of parts when you find it.peace

I agree with everything you are saying in this post. I forgot all about the 200XS, but I haven't had the priveledge of seeing one of those run yet. I heard they are hard to get and EXPENSIVE, but the ETECs aren't cheap either.
I know exactly what you are saying about the stockpile of parts. I will probably be buried with all my crossflow junk..... Good news for me is lots of real cheap parts available still. Thats where I can agree with Jeff too. A guy can go broke trying to keep a high perf merc running good. If I had a ton of money to throw around, I would probably be running one to, then again, i'd probably would have been writing checks to Dave Bush all along too .
Now onto the future, Brett has a vision and certainly has some accomplishments under his belt, Some like it and some don't, but, it's nice seeing something new and fast from the E side. This motor doesn't need the super high rpm like the merc because of the torque it has.
I would like to see a high perf version of the 2.6 motor, That way, you could safely run one on a V bottom Allison or Hydrostream. That may be a pipe dream........
Keep it up Brett, many of us love it, others are starting to pay attention....
