280 trims up on its own
When i got home from work yesterday i noticed my 280 trimmed all the way up...and i mean all the way, crushed the fiberglass cowl on the boat and warped the hell out of the alien on the motor...i got it trimmed down but it wouldnt trim up again with any of the 3 switches(on the motor, shifter and wheel) jus clicks....i disconnected the wires from the trim pump to the battery but the pump still had power going to it...i dont know how....any ideas?

Man.... Sorry to hear about the damage, that sux..The trim relays at the motor get their switching voltage from the tirm switches around your boat. Any one of your switches could be faulty. I had a wire fall off a switch terminal and lay accross another and cause this problem. That dosen't completely rule out a relay since it could be shorted at the trim motor side. That would normally result in the motor running constantly and only disconnecting the cables at the battery or removing the relay would stop it.

This is another reason to have a battery cutoff switch in the boat that cuts power to everything when you come out of the water.

I understand your point about the battery cut-off switch but that doesnt solve the problem while im in the water running the boat

I had the same problem quite a few year back when I bought my first Mirage with the new Mach CRT (cordless rotary trim) system. A brand new boat (never in the water). While driving it home for the first time, I looked in the mirror and saw the motor trimming up on its own. By the time I got the truck stopped, the engine had crushed the rear cowl on the boat and cracked the heck out of the engine cowling. To make a long story short, the CRT wheel had a short in it from the factory (wires were pulled too tight). It was an easy find and fix for a good electrician. Mach didn't warranty anything, nor cover any damages. At least Brad Collins (who had nothing to do with the CRT trim) stepped up and sent me a brand new rear cowl. It really wasn't his problem, but that's the kinda guy he is.

One more way for a Merc trim system to go full up on its own is to accidentally hit both up and down buttons at the same time.
