Jimbo, You are like an encyclopedia of cool retro boat pictures..... and somehow every picture seems slightly overpowered

You know not to take any wind out of Keith’s sails when he took off in that electric cart in WalMart, but Chris once wrote an article with pictures of our boats in Hot Boat readers rides. In it he made comment to the fact that even in Shop Rite we dont let anybody get past us with another shopping cart. Can never have too much power. Good thing we never met up with Keith in Shop Rite, we would all be banned there too.

Enjoying the read tonight, it's a great thread.

    Jim,
thanks for the pics of the transom all tied together. This boat had some at one time but up higher and only tied it to the front flange/lip of the splashwell. I like your setup much better.
I need to get these old plates off and see what I actually have.

    Aaron,
i had seen your avatar and thought the boats were close. I also thought I had read that your boat and maybe navspeeds boat spent some time at lake x.... I was told my boat was some kind of test boat there too when I bought it. Haven't confirmed it, just know this boat wasnt babied, and that part made sense. Though I would ask Steve about it if I can find him at the Miami boat show.... Thanks for the incentive.

Hey guys, back at it! 1985 22 velocity....sold the 245hp 2.5 that ran 66mph. Picked up a 250efi 3liter, fleet master lower with a 26 trophy plus. I am now getting 67mph at 5800 and thats all it will turn. Jack plate all the way up, trimmed out, full tank fuel and two guys about 180 each. The boat is definitely up on the pad and sort of hovers and rocks back and forth quite a bit...almost dangerously above 64mph and higher. I can trim down but it scrubs some speed. Propshaft about 1" below the pad. I would think i shoud be at 6200 running close to 76-77mph based on everyone else on here.....what else can i look at or tweak? I am thinking 300pm heads and computer...but I will do that after I am able to pull at least 75mph with this setup. I guess next thing I will do is weigh it then maybe run it with 1/4 tank solo?

Weighing it sounds like a good idea. Boat may be wet and floppy. Somethings not adding up.

Running similar motor on my challenger, I'd try some different props first... I tried a 28 trophy and it did not work 68-69 and chine walks bad.
running a 26 turbo lightning and a 27 Yamaha m to 74 and is well balanced

    1990 22' Velocity

Great thread. The variation in these speeds is interesting. I did not spend a lot of money or time into tweaking my set-up for speed, as the boat functioned perfectly as an all-around rig which was the goal.

My speed was similar to jk xlr8. 68-69 GPS with a 250 EFI, 4" Land&Sea jackplate and a 26 Trophy plus. The motor was limited to 5,800 rpm and the 1990 hull weighed 1,900 lbs according to the literature. I would imagine the 1985 hull which is around 400 lbs lighter, would pick up 1-2 mph with the same set-up.

Before i rigged the hull in 2004, I thought 72 woud be a normal top end, but I didn't get there with my set-up.

You guys in the 80's with 225's and 250's, are obviously doing everything right. I'd like to have driven mine around the 80 mark. That would have been awesome.

By the way, my boat is in Long Island now. Has anyone seen it? The new owner is not on here yet.

Thanks guys....it is definitely mind boggling. I know the motor is fine.....I ran a 23" 3 blade mirage this weekend. Hit the limiter at 6100 trimmed out jackplate all the way up....ran 65. I then put the engine down (about 3" below the pad) and no trim...ran 5700rpm at 65....almost doesnt make sense to me. I know the boat was redone a few years ago and it screamed. My 245 os only pushed it 63-64...now the 250efi only pushes a few more to 65-67. My bottom isnt done up like mikeys...but I would think I should be banging 75 no problem....I have a 26 pro et that I will try next weekend. I need a prop though that is strong out of the hole and a decent top end.....I can only think that it is water logged....how do you tell, with a moisture meter and a scale??
