Here is the skinny activator22......Yes the original notch was filled in but by the previous owner. His plane off was slower when the 3.1L Yamaha was put on it.The notch originally was put in at layup on these boats to help the lighter weight 2.4-2.5 motors perform better. With the later added weight of the 3L motors (100+ lbs.) it was harder to get on plane and was not as good in rough water handling compared to a full length pad. Hence plane off time and rough water handling are definitely both better. Top end speed has also increased on this particular boat with the same motor but I have also done more changes since taking ownership. I don't know of any down sides. I know another person with a more recent year activator 22 and he also has had the notch filled in and bottom recently blue printed and swears by the improvements. He runs a 3L merc. Hope that answers your question.
I Do not want anyone to miss understand here. These boats are excellent to run as originally made without any changes. I am just answering a specific question from a more discriminating owner.Last edited by dnelson964; 09-09-2012 at 10:04 PM.

I think some sort of skid planer is in store for sure. One thing id like to improve on is the motor getting washed down on slow down.No matter what i do the motor seems to take a bath more so then id like.I think the skid planer along with helping the porpois and take off should help on the motor wash down a bit.

Great info, thanks for sharing. It confirms what I'm feeling/seeing as I switched from a 2.4 to a 3.0 Merc. Both plane off time and rough water handling have suffered. I can feel the back of the boat "fall off" the keel/pad and onto the notch in some wave conditions and I'm sure having the additional running surface will help with the flightly bow when launching off waves.

With the 2.4 I had 12" setback. With a chopper (worked), had plenty of bow lift. Hull felt a little stern heavy during flight/re-entry. 50 pounds just in front of cockpit bulkhead made it nice and balanced.
I went to 6" with the 3L . With a Trohpy Plus (unworked) did not have enough bow lift. Went looking for an 8" plate, but ended up with a 10", now have plenty of lift with the same unworked Trophy. Hull feels more stern heavy during flight/re-entry (we both boat on LI Sound, so I'm sure you know what I'm talking about vs Great South Bay or Peconic Bay)
Would it be OK if I pm'd you with more question on setup, don't really want to tread all over the Velocity thread.

Sorry in advance for the continued "Activator" hijack,
but my favorite prop was a large barrel "Trophy" as apposed to the small barrel "Trophy Plus", it carried the rear much better.
Mine did have the 7" notch in the transom and it was perfectly balance with a 12" setback and the 2.5 Merc.
With the 3.0 liter the 12" was way to much, with the 7" setback it was much better but probably still not as balanced as the 2.5 with the 12"...22' Activator w/ 250xs Merc Opti, back home again

There you go ! Or another great (not so costly) prop you can still buy new today to start with would be a Turbo 'Lightning' in your pitch. Has a short large barrel w/ light flair and gives great stern and bow lift. It's 3 blade but handles great and has big top end if you can run it a little high. My boat didn't like the Trophy plus at all. Then I threw on a Turbo lightning and it was like a different boat. They are basically just a little different version of that 'TXP' aaronmt73 turned his big numbers with !
I first went down 3" setback, later 5" and that was better.Last edited by dnelson964; 09-11-2012 at 06:06 PM.

Well I've been trying to find a plate that I feel would work but have had no luck.So ill be buildng my own version. The question do I go directly in the under the jackplate or a bit lower into the built in notch.Since I have a hydraulic plate the last 5.5"s will be a bit narrower the the front.I think this should help on the motor wasdiwn.

Ill get a picture in the morning of what im working with.I wonder about the lateral support of the plate when that far away from the jackplate.Did it help with the motor not getting washed down as bad when comeing off plane?

Yes, The Allison plate slows the stern descent some.
