correct oil for mercury racing 250xs
new to the optimax dfi enginge. I have a 2005 mercury racing 250xs. Is the mercury premium plus oil or mercury optimax/dfi oil best suited for my motor? From the manufacturer description, both appear to be for opti/dfi motors

thanks to all, I finally found the manual which also specified premium plus. Does anybody know why the mercury racing motors specify this oil instead of the opti/dfi oil?

I wasn't looking for an obvious answer. Just trying to understand the mechanical differences of the mercury racing opti and the regular opti. This motor is on a hydrostream voyager which will be carrying my family and will see plenty of slow to mid speeds. I will only be "racing" when they get dropped off at the dock. My point is this, I know this is the best oil for wot operation but is it ok for slow speeds as well. Not sure why bananas are crooked but I do know they don't cost as much as a 250sx.

Can Alisyn, Klotz, or any other good quality synthetic be used in the Optimax motors?

To my knowledge and friends with merc acing premium plus is what the testing with. It is what they can promise you 100% works. The truth is a top syntetic like Alisysn will work , but stay away from Klotz per a noteworthy builder of race engines and the tear downs he has done.
However, i would run Merc/quiksilver Premium plus as long as it is under warranty just to cover your A$$.

How about the BRP Evinrude XP50 or XP100 in an Opti? Is the XP100 the same oil Ski-doo uses for the etec sleds? Gotta wonder.

the oil is named XD100, not XP100, and yes, it's the ETEC oil.
even it may be also a super oil for Mercs because it's a special synthetic DFI oil, if I would own a Merc, I would use the oil recommended by Merc.
I also do not use Merc oil in my ETEC, even it would work, I use the recommended XD100 oil.

XD.........that's right. You can tell I never use BRP oils, just hear good things about the stuff.

I am going thru this dilemma today. Went to buy my first round of "stuff" from my newly delivered 2007 300XS with a zero hr new powerhead on a Cougar 21. Boat is new this week to me. Went to local Merc shop, "knowlegable" sales guy pointed me away from Prem Plus towards Optimax/DFI and said it was the newer/better product. I walked out with it. Came home , put on glasses, the OPtimax/DFI product says NOT FOR MOTORS REQUIRING TC-W3... 2007 300XS manual says "MUST USE TC-W3 oils. So back I'll head tomorrow for some Premium Plus...
