I want to make my 1994 Mercury 175 XRI Black max louder but I don't have all the tools to be pulling the power head etc to remove the exhaust can. Can't I just drill two 1 inch holes in the rear of the mid section above the water line to get some sound? If you want it quieter then plug it with 2 rubber expansion plugs? If you drill through the mid section can't you keep drilling and drill though the exhaust can or will it still need to be removed? I am just a little confused on why you have to remove the can and why can't you just drill through the mid and into the can.

On the use of expansion plugs.........I'd think you'd probably melt them if you run your motor for any good distance, you gotta remember, there's a lot of heat coming out of the exhaust and you'd need a special rubber that will withstand those temps, not to mention chemical attack from fuel and oil.

You can drill through the mid and into the can, but the net results will not be as you would expect. It's going to be more like a leak in your cars exhaust pipe. In order to get that deeper throaty sound the can needs to be either removed and replaced with a tuner or the can get's cut short. The whole concept here is to be able to use the entire mid section like an amplifier where the sound is able to expand and gets deeper in sound. I've done several mid exhaust mod's and anything less than at least 2, 1 3/4" dia. holes will not give you a decent sounding exhaust. Think twice before you cut...........

Those considering the mod I did on my 300x w/a Hydro-Tec Tuner will realize that the sound is equiv to a BBC vs a SBC. It's all in the size of the mid, 300x mid is like an amplifier.......LOL.

It's not as simple as removing the can. You must still keep the exhaust can but you may be able to remove/cut off the bottom section. I'm not that familiar with the exhaust inners of a 175, hopefully someone who is familiar will jump in here and express their way of doing it. Post up your motor S/N and I'll look at the mid section views.

And then for the 3.0L guys with a standard can / midsection , there's always the option of making it look just like a 2.5 offshore unit ...
