Time to dust her off, late thaw this year, the cool pool should be ice free in a couple more days. Some maintenance first though, plugs, vst and gonna replace the compressor.

Hi Guys
I have a 2004 200xs that I purchased used it currently has a cle lower unit.
When I recently had it checked out at my local Merc dealer they mentioned that it originally came with a torquemaster.
Is there a good source for info on this motor that any one can point me to.

Thanks I'm doing that.
Is this motor the same power head as the 200xs ros except a different mid section and lower unit.
Does the torque master for this motor have two sets of water pickups one in the nose and one on each side or is it like a standard lower unit just one on each side?12 Velocity 220 - 12 Mercury 300xs

You have a Gen 1 as a 2004. When they re-introduced the motor as a Gen 2 it was a stronger 2.5 motor, perhaps 30-40 horsepower. You should have a standard bass clamp and trim on a 2004. On the TM, I'm not sure but someone else will know.

For those interested in these late model Gen II 2.5/200XS/ROS motors, I can give you my firsthand personal experience with them on the 23MTR I built. I only put a little less than 15 hours/500 miles on the rig before I sold it and got back into a 28 Skater, but I ran it enough to give my opinion on the motors. Startup and idle were always flawless - idled at 600 rpm out-of-gear and in-gear with hardly a trace of smoke (even when cold) and very quiet. The low idle made shifting very smooth and manners around the docks wonderful - and I'm one of those guys that won't even shift his 2.5/280s while running at idle. Low to mid range power was excellent, and I'd say was probably comparable to a 260/280. From 6,000 on up is where the power difference would be vs a 260/280 - they don't keep pulling nearly as hard as what 260/280s do. For comparison to the same setup with 225PMs or 2.5/260s, this is what I can tell you: Dave Bush had a 23MTR originally with 2.5/260s that ran a best of 115, then he put 225PMs on it and it ran a best of 101. The 23MTR I had with the 200XSs ran a best of 99, but without ever being dialed-in. I am certain that I would have seen 105 with propwork and ideal conditions. So, for performance only, I'd say the 200XS are stronger than 225PMs and obviously quite behind 260s/280s on top end. My fuel mileage was very hard to accurately calculate, as I never seemed to get a good feel for topping of my tanks, but it seemed to be better than 3mpg combined (or 6+ mpg per motor). This is most certainly much better than either a 225PM or 260/280. They do burn a LOT of oil though! Overall, I think these motors make a great performance consumer/recreation motor either as a single on a smaller boat (17' - 20') or as twins on a mid-size boat (22' - 24'). IMO, they are not strong enough to run as a single on anything 21' and up, or as twins on anything 25' and up. For the right application, I do highly recommend these motors though!

Thank you Greg G and Rayzor.
I've had the motor for one year,I purchased it to help sell a boat that I had.
The boat has now sold and the motor remains.
I was really impressed by its performance during this time.
It reminded me of a 2.5 OS carb I had in the early 90's but a lot more friendly.
Loves to rev, pulls strong thru the mid range all the way to the limiter.
So I was thinking of keeping it and giving it a little more TLC and thought than previously.
So now I'm trying to have a greater understanding of what I have.
Maybe trying to start another project......lol
Thank You
Roger

Roger, your 2004 Gen I makes 200hp and as Rayzor said above the Gen II's are truly ROS's and make 240hp. Your Gen I is a 20" motor where the Gen II ROS motors are only 15" and have the heavier clamp bracket and trim system and the trim pump that mounts inside the hull. The Gen I's are a nice little motor and VERY fuel efficient with good manners. I would keep it, there aren't many around. Hope that helps.

I have a 2006 (last year made) 200xs 15 SM 1.87 that I bought from Allison Boats new in crate in 2009, it was said to be one of the two last Gen I engines to leave the plant... To say they make 200hp is correct but that is probably not max power since no other 200hp engine could run with them. I have heard what the dyno numbers are and they say +10% and change. The Gen II is a different animal and probably has 10-20hp over the Gen I.

Running great, original plugs, 580 hours, premium fuel @ 1.50/litre now.
