Anyone bite the bullet on the new 200xs race offshore short shaft or SST models yet?

XSflight, alot of Merc Mafia guys didnt seem to interested in it, I think its a cost thing????? Are you looking at getting one? Dude I live 40mins From Fon du Lac and that is a mean motor, I was talking to a Merc Development guy months ago and he hadnt seen many leave the plant. It sucks for you Merc guys that the recession hit so bad, theirs only a handfull of Racing guys left at the plant. Let us know if you buy one and your impressions, Id call Jacos Marine and ask them their opinions, they know those motors pretty good. Cheers, Brannon

I had phoned Rick Mackie [from mercury] some months ago and quizzed him about them, he did let it slip that the SST had numbers like 240 floating around it. Also mentioned that if it were not for the europeans these engines wound not even exist. Thanks to demand from our forward thinking friends, I'll FINALLY be able to replace my 92 EFI/20"-2.5 -200, NOT add any weight and lower the overall centre of gravity. The new R.O.S. is going to fit like a glove. I'm thinking that the taller 1.75:1 ratio is pointing to a taller power curve as well?

Are these available for a consumer boat. I thought I had seen somewhere that only race-teams could purchase but maybe that was the old tech (EFI) due to EPA emmissions rules.
I assume these are Opti motors but using the 2.5 block. Nicasil cylinders? What is the difference between a standard Opti other than the block displacement?
They still seem a little heavy compared to a 260 or 280 but still an acceptable alternative. How can they put out 240hp with the 10% rating rule? I would think if they are rated 200hp the most they could be is 220hp although I hope I am wrong?Half B - Just one more project away from the promised land.

I heard of a 200xs which putted out +- 230hp (the older 200xs)
But again I havent seen it myself.
A friend of mine bought a brand new 200xs ROS. Hasnt been delivered yet. Hope it will perform very good.

Michael, actually that makes sense since the Optis don't spin up so high no need for Nic, they should be that much cheaper then.
BigBoy, let us know how it performs on your friends boat. What type of hull did it go on?Half B - Just one more project away from the promised land.

I ask rick about the ratings on the R.O.S.?, he just laughed and said "were just gonna call that one a real STOUT 200." Better to walk softly and carry a big stick. Mercs history for purposely underrating their engines is a long one. By the tone of ricks voice and hint of sarcasm that will be the case here as well. If the SST is making 240@8000 then I think we can expect the R.O.S. to make 225+@ 7000. The old 2.5xs was making 225 @ 64-6700 rpm. Remember, these are not consumer motors , I"m SURE my 92 xri was making over 200 @ 54-5900. I for one took note of the gear ratio change from 1.87:1 with generation 1 200xs and 2.5 xs to the generation 2 offering of 1.75:1. Thats over 6% taller and I suspect a torque curve to match. I have heard as well that the new motors will have different injectors, compressor, computer and if your paying attention, new oil as well. Engines are shipping as we speak-yahooooooooooo!!!!!!

Looking forward to hearing the reviews on this engine. I am just going to be breaking a newly rebuilt 260 this summer but in a couple of years when my HST has been rehabed I can see putting the 260 on that boat and buying this for the Grandsport.
Maybe get good gas mileage while cruising too.Half B - Just one more project away from the promised land.

Not sure what a tandem deck is? V Hull boat I get, does it have a pad (high performance)? What kind of weight is the hull? Some pictures of the boat and information on how the new engine handles would be excellent (fuel efficiency, torque, etc). I appreciate your input as so far the only person who knows someone with this motor...you are the man!!!

We've bought 2 of them, one for a race customer and the other for stock.
