    Aluminum oxidation (HELP)

This weekend I started work on a 1958 Mercury Mark 10,mainly the carburetor. I took the carb to work with me and a co worker suggested a new all purpose cleaner-1 ST MISTAKE. In a hurry I plunged in the carb and got to work. To make a long story short after approx 4 minutes my carb was black from oxidation. Is there any chemical I can use to get back the unfinished aluminum luster? I scrubbed most of the oxidation off but it still has a dark grey color. This is on a motor with about 5 hours on it and I want it to look right.......Thanks Rob

That cleaner you dropped it in was likely acid based. This would etch the aluminum and remove the protective coating that was once on it. You ban try soaking it in a water based carburetor cleaning solution and see if that gets rid of the discoloration, then use clear alodine to reseal it.
