Hydrostream HST - Set-up/prop recommendations?
Bought a 1989 Hydrostream HST in Oct 07' with no engine. The boat needed some interior work...so, bought a new set of bucket seats for it and had an old 200hp Evinrude crossflow (20" leg) leftover from another boat lying around so I mounted that on a 12" Slidemaster manual jackplate with a 6" Slidemaster hydraulic jackplate behind that, giving me about 18" of total setback. The crossflow had no LWP on the lower and no temp or water pressure gauges hooked to it (my fault) so I fried the block. I have since purchased a 200hp Mariner outboard (25" leg) hooked-up temp and tach gauges. I'm currently running a 24pitch drag-cut chopper and at WOT motor turns right at 6000rpm's.
My questions are directed at current HST owners..........1) what amount of setbacks are you running? 2) combined with what hp motors? 3) what height above the pad is your prop shaft when (trimmed and running full out) gives you the best top-end? 4) what type/size/pitch props have you had the best results with? 5) what kind-of top-ends are you seeing on (GPS)? 6) what improvements can I make to the hull/engine to get more top-end? I would appreciate any and all input....thanks.....

Many HST owner's are running 10"-12" of setback with the prop-shaft 1/2 above the center pad. 18" is alot of stress on the transom and may be counter productive to topend speed...you may wind up burying the transom instead of creating lift (but I've heard of one guy running big setback (16+")on his HST with no problems so ????) The old Hydrostream owners site has some articles on HST setup and the guy reccommends no more than 6" of setup. Bare in mind that there is already at least 6" of setback built into the design of the hull. I will probably settle on 10"-12" of setback on my AE-21 when I finally rig the boat and beef up the transom knees.....

25 inch mid needs to go. Hst's vary in weight alot, more to do with how much water is trapped in the foam of the outside sponsons.
With a 200 and a 28 hoss triton you should'nt need more than 10 inches of setback. And you need to get you lower coned and lose that x-long mid.

12" set back, prop shaft 1/2" above the pad, & a Yamaha drag prop.

HST set-up
First let me say I appreciate everyones replies to my thread...(Mapleleaf) I realize 18" of setback is a lot of stress on my transom however, if you go to the Hydrostream website it states that "the HST transom area is extremely strong built to handle the added strain of the required setback recommending(a MINIMUM of 8"). It also states "setback will help with performance" which is why I initially installed the added setback. (Jupiter) I really haven't noticed the boat "burying the transom" that you describe. When I start to air the boat out (around 65mph) it seems to get-up on the pad nicely. I would like the web address you found that states no more than 6" of setback to see what other information it might provide? (Capt Insane) When I take a straight edge and come straight off the center pad back to my engine with my current setback with both jackplates (both all the way down) with my (25" mid) the water-line is about 1/2 way between my cavatation plate and prop shaft. Even with a low water p/u on the lower unit of a (20" mid) I don't see how the engine would get sufficient water??? I am going to take a hard look at the foam on the sponsons for water soaking, the boat (did leak at the rear deck seams when I got it) so I remove the rubrail and sealed both sides with 3M deck joint caulk and that took care of it. (Hammerhead) What brand of jackplate are you running and is it hydraulic or manual? What diameter and pitch is the Yamaha drag prop you're running? What HP is your motor? Is it a 20 or 25" midsection? Thanks again everyone for your input...

Bigboy I don't really have a good top end prop I have 24p copies it runs 92 mph with a good hole shot. My 26p Yamaha worked by R&R out Henderson Nevada runs A strong 97 mph. I have seen 102.

You can hang a V-8 on an HST and not worry. The entire ass end is all tied in together.
