I'm thinking about santa bringing a Walkera cb100 for christmas. Will this be a good beginner heli? I recently purchased one of the 3 channel heli from the mall and cant waite till the next charge. Im having a blast with this thing. Found its much easier to control indoors. Seems like the radio glitchs frequently outside.

Paul, that's an awesome site - I actually have it bookmarked. A lot of stuff is a bit old, but very good info. I wish I had the time to mess with my Raptor - I've been so busy on the site though and I haven't had a chance to even touch it. I will soon, hopefully. Have you been flying the TRex lately?
I love my CB100, but I honestly think an mSR is a better choice, especially if you've never flown a 4-channel, single-rotor heli before. The mSR is almost indestructible (to a point, of course), and parts for it are cheap and can be had locally. I'll be honest and say that I prefer the way the CB100 flies over the mSR - the CB100 flies like a much larger helicopter, and it's less springy, but it's also more than twice the weight of the mSR, which is probably why. The mSR is easier to fly, though.
Here's an mSR next to a CB100, they're about the same size. Both are easy to fly, but the mSR is faster and likely more reliable. The CB100 is much more complex (it uses real servos, it's double-brushless with two speed controllers, etc.) and while durable, it will not take the beating that the mSR will.

I stopped by the local hobby shop today. They had a shelf full of helis. They must have had like 25 or so of the msr's. I believe I will go with the msr over the walkera. Do to the hobby shop having parts for it. However that cb100 is one of the coolest looking helis.
one question though. Will I be able to use the radio from the msr for other helis once I plan to upgrade?

You can use the mSR's radio with any other 3 and 4-channel mini heli or plane from Blade and Parkzone that is DSM compatible. That includes the mCX, mCX2, 120SR, Tandem, and all Parkzone ultra-micro planes. The radio will not work with anything from Walkera or others. Also, that radio will not work with larger helis like the Blade SR and Blade 400 since those are 6-channel helis.

I haven't flow the TRex since I installed the new gyro. I have a USB interface with it so I can program the AVCS mode. I took the 401 gyro and put it on the Raptor. Also after doing some research I found the tail rotor on the Raptor is running backwards. I fixed that and have to program the radio to the gyro and I'm ready... Least waiting on a nice day to fly.
assetsinwater, if you think you are going to get into RC, get a DX6i and a "bind and fly" mSR.Last edited by Forkin' Crazy; 12-08-2010 at 03:37 PM.

I hate to keep digging this thread back up but have a couple more questions.
Dont really have the cabbage for the dx6 right now but thinking the dx5 might be the radio I get. I would rather be able to look down at my trim switches instead of listening for a beep like the controller that comes with the rtf version. Is the dx5 any more of an upgrade?
What spare parts should I stock up on now to keep me out of the hobby shop for a few days?

For fixed-pitch helis like the mSR and the 120SR, the DX5 is a HUGE improvement over the stock "Xbox" transmitter. It doesn't have the dead spots in the middle like the stock Tx.
You can use a DX6i or better with a full-size collective-pitch heli in the future. Well worth the investment now.'89 Hydrostream Vegas XT, '90 Merc 2.4 Bridgeport PCU EFI

My Blade mSR got a new MD500 body kit today.
Test flight ok, I need to shave a little weight off the airframe to compensate for the body. -Amazing how sensitive these micro's are to a few grams of load!
