    R/C helicopters

    Hey guys,

I got this cheap little 3-channel "toy" last week, and I can't put it down!
I kind of got the hang of flying it, and now I want more.
I'm going to try a slightly larger fixed-pitch 4-channel next.
    This could get ugly.

I have have/had a couple of those. I had a blast terrorizing my cats with it. You really need still air and a wide-open room to fly them.

    Ditto the "still air" requirement.

I showed it to both the cat and the dog, and demonstrated that the rotor will HURT their noses if they get too close. They like to watch, but they know better than to attack.

My very cheap havic helli. Its a blast to play with inside the house. Must have still air to fly it in. These are simple to fly. Anyone can hover this around with no expierance at all.

Odd tail rotor configuration..... Most coaxials don't have tail rotors. It is not 4 channel? Throttle, yaw, elevator (fore-aft), and aileron (right-left). Wasn’t much thinking of which one I bought. My local hobby shop carries a full supply of replacement parts for both of mine.

    MCX is 4 channel.

With the glow in the dark kit:

The MCX does well inside. It isn't fast enough to get into trouble too badly. It is precise though, I can land on a bar stool with ease.

I bought this mSR a few weeks ago. Totally different animal, although it is not collective pitch, it flies pretty close to one. You can hover and maneuver around with little trouble indoors, but don't get carried away. I've flown it outside in a very slight wind... It will haul arse! You have to be careful to give yourself plenty of room to pull up in a dive. I have smacked it into the ground twice. Wasn't pretty either.

The little pink coaxial heli is a 3-channel: Throttle, turn, elevator. It's very slow, and not very acrobatic. The up-facing tail rotor gives it elevator function. After removing the little clear plastic deflector, it moves forward a little faster now, and drifts forward slowly while hovering. It seems a little more fun to fly this way.

Kevin, I ordered an Exceed Falcon 40 V2 last night. It's a single fixed-pitch with 20" diameter and a tail rotor. It was only $90, thanks to high-efficiency child labor.
Hopefully I can keep it in one piece...

I don't know much about these, but i was in Hong Kong recently and they were everywhere. You could get a 'self stabilizing' model (you could take your hands of the controls and it would just hover in place) that was about 10" of so long for about $25 (and that's before I even tried to negotiate...everything is negotiable there.) I was very tempted. But i REALLY don't need another toy to waste my time with! So I resisted...

I see. It doesn't have a swashplate then. The MCX is the most stable out of my two. You can fly it with one hand. That is how I got the flying pic... added some forward trim. You will pay more for the E-Flite but if you have a LHS with plenty of spare parts' that's a big plus. And if you are like me... You'll need them.

One thing about them is they have Spectrum 2.4GHz DSM2 so they are solid with no radio interference or failure so far. If you already have a 2.4GHz radio, you can get the BNF (bind and fly). I also like the lay out of the box/case. MCX is $129 and the mSR is $179 for RTF, BNF is about 30 bucks cheaper. Both use the same tiny lithium polymer battery. I get close to 5 minutes with the MCX and about the same inside with the mSR. Out side it’s a different story.
