Todays death of Soundgardens front man Chris Cornell. Brought back great memories of my younger days. Having a 19 drinking age, even today it brings over lots of American kids here on weekends. Back in my day, police kind of turned a blind eye to under age drinking, if it was somewhat a safe environment. Even today, the police while they don't endorse under age drinking. They tend too tolerate a house party with some booze and pot, as long as the kids are not causing problems. About the worse thing that happens even today with teen parties with booze and pot, is the police break up the party.

I'm not saying bars let in under age. Just its a lot easier for a 16 year old to sneak in a bar here. Once in they rarely checked id and even the police didn't come in looking for under age drinkers.

    although on house parties: http://www.abbynews.com/news/abbotsf...ation-parties/

Note the police didn't fine the adults. No teens got arrested for pot or under age drinking, etc. Even the police spokesperson said the fines for allowing under age drinking are no big deal. Worse case scenario here for teens drinking and doing some pot. The cops confiscate the pot and booze and send you home.

Net result I was lucky in that getting into bars at 16 was no big deal. Even if the cops came in the bar and checked your id. All they would do is kick you out. Pretty much all the American kids took advantage of this. A little pot no biggie, the cops took the joint. Our knick name in Seattle is Vansterdam! So most of the up coming bands in Seattle and even LA played here in those days. A lot of the bands in say Seattle came here because most of their members and fans too young for bars in the states.

Basically turning 16 in 1988 and 19 in 1991. We basically hung out in a bar downtown every day that had live bands every night. Pretty much all the Seattle grunge era bands played there at some point in their early careers. Saw Nirvana there in 1990, as an example.

Soundgarden, Alice In Chains, Pearl Jam, etc too.

Anyway, sad day, since I've been a fan since Soundgarden's beginnings on the music scene....

Thats the way it was me in the 60's (born 1950) back in Illinois Chi burbs. Seems a party somewhere every W/E and the bars and the rock band concerts. 21 drinking age, but no one cared. Hell, cops see us at the biker bar all night and basic if you could start it after, good nuff. If pulled over, cop say " go home right now and if I see ya again its jail".."Ye sir". Damn, even tossed a 1968 Graduation party my parents house (think my dad got more wasted than we did!) and couldn't park within 3 blocks the place. Had the whole damn school there AS THE cops! They knew us little outlaws enough and now at 18, many off to college, many off for a "Senior vacation in Vietnam". They were both happy to see us go, as sad as we sure .."kept them busy at the job"! Funny too as I went in the Army, to Nam, Germany, and got and STILL HAD A MONTH to go before "legal drinking age"

Sure was fun the old says.

Kinda reminds me the USA, and "snowflakes" Dave Mason, on a 12 string acoustic guitar.
