That's the downside to the "First to Market" approach to things.

I remember the very first 3 liters the cooling holes for the water dumps in the tuner were too close to the ex ports sucking water back into the engs, I mean did they actually run the things on boats or what!
Do bear in mind that Mercury did not introduce new products that often and did not have the processes in place to properly test things to make sure they work before customer launch.

The 3 liters were less than satisfying when they were launched. The DFI was a disaster. With Verado, things were pretty much spot on if you disregard fuel consumption.

I'll admit the Verado has been better than i thought it would be. Gearcases on fast saltwater boats have been a problem but overall its not near as bad as their other new stuff have been. Remember the Laser, that was a fun time to be doing warranty work.

The way I understand the EPA regs. any motor manufactured to a certain "star" emissions level cannot be tampered with.

in the EU and US yes thats true just like cars and diesels ( under a certain size diesels)
2011 there will be rules for gas inboards/sterndrives

In Australia I have heard they are fomulating rules that might come in late 2010 for boats, i'm sure they will just be a copy of the US Regs
China even has rules for some lakes believe it or not
