I thought Tom M at Hillsboro Marine bought and sold Byng's motors. Did you buy them too Butch?

Ryan, back in the early 80's, when these 3.4 Litre EFI's were available, Byng was buying them new, direct from Merc Hi-Perf., as an OEM. In the years that followed, Byng later sold off lots of his used motors. He was buying factory direct, as all the south Florida go-fast builders were, up until about 1993, when some of the bigger Merc outboard dealers complained enough to catch Mercs ear, and they then were forced to buy from a dealer of there choice. In the 80's, when Hillsboro Marine was at the inlet, Tom performed his share of service on some Midnight's. Hillsboro was never a certified Merc Hi-Perf Outboard dealer, able to buy direct from Merc. If he sold a Hi-Perf motor, it was via another local Hi-Perf dealer.

Byng's my brother in law..some how....I bought one of them from him, for Mike Mullens.. all mine were carb..Stan Irwin did my warranty work, then Tommy got me the Cosworth's under warranty when Stan gave it up..he said they were the "first" ones released..They ran great..I have no regrets owning 3.4's..Many years ago, a boating mag ran a test on identical boats..3.4 carb vs. 3.6 V8..Results as I remember were so close on 3 runs that picking one over the other was like picking a blonde over a redhead..The V8 was fastest, the 3.4 had the grunt..Sam probably has the article..I lost mine in a hurricane..

Here is a story for the technical gurus..I was asked by Larry Goldman, who took care of "Cat Man", to find out why the four 3.4 EFI's were so hard to start..Simple..whoever rigged it, instead of putting a separate fuel pump switch on each engine, wired them to the ignition switch..Turn the switch to start, and the fuel pumps got no power, ie., no fuel pressure..I told them they needed to either put in some separate switches, or a relay..They said it always worked before and I didn't know what I was doing..I said good by..I don't think it was ever fixed..The guy was that owned it was CHEAP!!!

Another case of all dollars...and no cents. And, if the batteries were not 100% at all times, the Merc EFI's of that era, simply would not run. If your batteries charge state was at 90%, you had 90% power, 80% charge state, 80% power, etc...Yes, Cat Man was at Aventura Marina then, where the owner lived.

Nope...not a dope boat. Owned by an old guy in Royal Palm in Boca Raton who kept it in a warehouse. Total timewarp, Navy blue sides, sky blue bottom, grey decks, shag blue carpet.
