3.4 liter EFI Offshore
About a year and a half ago i went to the UK on a vacation , and a week later i found myself buying a full container of Mercury parts. So to make a short story of this , several motors were in with the deal. One happened to be this 3.4 Liter EFI 20' Offshore the other a T2X . Not seeing or knowing much of the 3.4 over the past years i had really payed no attention to the motor until i read a few posts here on S&f. It ends up the motor was a display piece at there factory, and once it was closed down it ended up being sold with all the other parts.
Thought some of you guys would enjoy this and maybe shed some light and photos using these in Offshore Racing.

3.4
Back in the 80's "neil bonnett" was set up with laser boats and he had a 3.4 on a 19ft laser bass boat that we and the laser rep tried to help set up.. The boat was not as fast as a 18ft tunnel bass with a mod vp carb... Motor ran good but was to heavey for the boat.. I think it ran in the upper 80's best i remeber... That is the only 3.4 i ever seen out in public other than boat shows...
Wish i had one for keep sakes..

We bought a 3.4 consumer model in 1983. Put it on a Switzer GL-21. Buyer had major mechanical failures,Merc agreed to take it back and give the customer a new 225.The 225 ran for years with no issues and was actually faster.Never knew what Merc was thinking with that 3.4. Only neat feature was an movable trim tab to help with steering torque.2 cables were connected to the steering arm and moved the tab in conjunction with torque.Neat concept.

As far as the trip it was very cool, but out dollar wasn't worth SH$T so between customs, shipping and the economy going down the toilet , i still feel the pain.

It all started when i bought the motor- (in the photo with this reply). I know alot of you guys have seen it- a L-6 with morgan carbs and some short pipes, a OMC Stinger gearcase and what ever else.
So anyway after it was shipped back here to the states, i called the guy to thank him and he suggested i take a trip over, see the country and possibly find some more thing. So off i go , spending time with him and his family picking thru his engine shop which was a 100 year old 3 story church with more junk than i ever seen. I did find a small amout of racing parts and some odds and ends but not the load i was hoping to find. The last day of my trip he mentioned a old shop near Liverpool, a friend of his amed Frank. He asked if i would spin a wrench with his guys then later in the day he would rumn me over to see his friend. We end up at a small brick building named OUTBOARDS AND HYDROPLANES- established in the early 50s. Whell at this point i had some serious wood! I met the guys and before you know it they were talking obout Bp's. Twisters and Formula One and showing me pictures of 75H motors at the Boat shows back in the 50s - way cool. After 10 pounds of fish and chips 4 lunch, Frank took me in a room where i found the T2x, speedmaster parts, New BP wraparound cowlings and even late moderl alpha and bravo parts. He said he was retireing and his mechanic was taking over the business and had no use for all the parts. This is where my brain over reacted and i offered to buy it all. What an ordeal this was, the shipping, customs pulling the container, emptying it all, and charging me . I don't regret the decision but the our economy has stopped me from selling off any of it at this time. Not the stupidest thing i ever did, but boy do i have a pile of sh*t

Interesting that both the 3.4 and the T2 have steel flywheels. Obviously the T2 as well as every high perf 3.4 I ever ran across came with aluminum. Neat stuff anyway. Hope you'll post more pics.
