Ok after I get my Boat up and going I know in less than a year i will want more power I am starting out with a stock 455 Olds. i know that i will need forged pistons and was think of destroking to the 425 Olds due to they had a forged crank and better bore to stroke and better rod to stroke. so pleas tell me about your turbocharging good ,bad & ugly points

I would keep the 455 stock and start building a BBC from the ground up to turbo-charge or super-charge. You will be pouring good money after bad trying to make reliable power from the Olds.

If you're going to change engines, why not go to the new LS engines? Save a ton of weight and they make real god power out of the box, also injected engines are easier than trying to seal a carb. You can suck through a carb then to the compressor but you run the risk of the fuel dropping out of suspension.

On the up side, there is plenty of water around for a water to air intercooler. Watch the turbine size and plenum volume, else you can end up waiting a week for the lag. Sheild the intake, droplets of water hitting a compressor wheel doing 80 - 120,000 rpm can be a little terminal. Keep the exhaust gasses to the turbine as hot as possible, it is actually the thermal expansion that drives the turbine, not the piston in the exhaust stroke.

I'm sure there is more, but that's my 2c for now...

BBC is cool and so isnt an LS1 how much will one of the cost me to start i figure around 2000 bucks just to get some thing worth building. I can get a 425 Crank that is a factory forged for around $300 then $500 for H beam rods from Dick Miller, Ross will build me pistons for about $700. the block is good for about 700 HP with out a main bearing girdle i dont think i need more than that in power. Thanks you for your input

I have enough stuff to put together a 468 BBC Gen IV with Eagle, rods, eagle crank, TRW 8.5/1 comp pistons. Good base rotating assembly for $1400.00. Also have some other goodies I'll sell for a Gen IV like a Jessel belt cam drive assembly.
Good base engine for blown power up to 800 hp. Anything more than that you need to go with a aftermarket block like Dart Big M.

all else aside, good luck finding anything turbo related for a olds. i found my turbo kit for bbc with intercooler, manifolds, and lots of stainless lines for $1600 used in great shape. much easier and safer to build reliable power. btw i use a pfm twin turbo draw through system and it works awesome and i picked up a solid 10+ mph from my mild bbc.

like i said it will be a while and i kinda want to know what to look for as far as what not to do when puting it in and what was easy basicly problems you ran into. If I change engine you need new motor mount system and i have every thing for a Olds and the Olds will make enough power and hold up just gota get the oiling system right .

I feel your passion to make somthing out of a underdog like the Olds but you just can't make a Donkey out of an Ass's ear.

I dont think that it will be that hard the crank and rods are not a problem just gota use the forged 425 olds crank and some H beam rods. get pistons made and the stock heads with big valve will work and if i want later i can go to Rocket Racing and get there Aluminum heads they flow great. The only thing I see as a problem is the Oiling system but now that i have seen a diagram of it i see where the restictors need to be . Even a SBC uses restrictors in racing circle track or all the oil ends up in the heads i dont see anyone calling them junk

Many people have traveled that road and tried to make "reliable" Hp out of the Olds and if any were successful it would have been alot more popular than it is now. History speeks for its self.
Most engines useing solid lift cam followers run oil restrictors including the BBC. The BBC is the most cost effective and reliable engine on the market to build. Thats why it is so popular. Best Bang For The Buck..........

Hmm you know this is about turbocharging not my engine choice so lets stop going back and forth on it you will never like the engine i get that but it's what i am going to use . What problems has any one hade with turbocharging and what special things did you need to do to make them work in your boat
