Old Oxidation on Ol' Ranger
1987 Ol' Ranger 350V with a horrible lookin' top cap. Oxidation spots, milky white, rough texture, barley shines...
I was thinking in general....
1. clean hull with prep solvent/oxidation remover
2. sand (Orbital buffer)with 800 grt then 1000, then 1200 (dish soap too)
3. polish with 3m or similar polishing compound (using orbital buffer)
4. Carnuba wax (marine wax) (using orbital buffer)
Am I on the right path.....Any suggestions???

orbital buffer prob. wont do much good. need high speed buffer. wet sanding is a lot of work i would try a heavy cut paste compund on a high speed buffer first.

there are a lot of ways to do it...the fastest is to high speed buff with 3m either cleaner wax or restorer wax. The restorer wax is a good compound and with the wax its a one step deal.

I recently tried Aquabuff. It works wonders. Need high speed though.

I just did my hull, high speed buffer is a must. 1 pass heavy cut cleaner (rubbing compound), 1 pass polishing compound, wax, wax, wax. Shines like new and the color came back. If it's really rough, might want to do a pass with 1000 or 2000 wet sand first.

THANKS GUYS,
The buffer I have is good for 3500, so I think it will do.
I'm going to start with some 800-1200 grt, wetsanding with dawn, then move onto the rubbing compound, then poishing, and marine carnuba.
I'll post pics when its all done, or after I really screw it up, and repaint it!!!

800-1200 will cut pretty quick, so be careful... I never go rougher than 1500 and that is with great care and it will still take about 4 step follow up to finish the job to truly eliminate the corrective scratches instead of just conditioning them.. You may want to try some 1500-2000 and follow up with a 2 stage Aquabuff (diminishing grit products are great) effort followed by a polish then wax... Just My opinion based on My past experiences.. There are about 7 zillion Guy's better at working a finish than I, and You may be one of them so keep Us posted and take some pictures as You go... I like to see this stuff...

I used to use softscrub with a #1 wool pad on a high speed buffer all the time, sometimes I'd mix it with compound. Then go to polish. If really bad it will be easier to wetsand some, but stay minimal with it this is not laquer. You can sand through the gel.

I found that regular cheap vinager will take it off and shine it to. You can either scrub it with a regular dish pad or spray it on and let it eat away at the oxidation if it is realy thich like mine was.

clear coating
I'm in the "same boat" now. Mine is all shined up, but now needs the clear coat. My Ranger is 17.5". I wonder what the clear coat cost is (is your boat about the same size)
.............. or if I could do it myself for cheaper. I've seen the clear coat stuff for sale, bujt I guess you need a "gun" to spray it evenly????? Thats a whole nother post....
Thanks
