    starter problems

i'm scratching my head, for some reason my starter is going the wrong direction. yes the power wires are on correctly they only fit one way

for some reason my starter turns to the left and it only engages the drive when turned to the right. what would cause it to go left?
    motor is a 85 90hp evinrude.

due to i have never had this engine running.

is my engine right had rotation or left hand?
my starter goes left witch does not push the drive upward.
when i turn the starter right by hand the drive is forced upward.

i have checked all connections with the wiring diagram and everything looks to be 100% correct. obviously i have somthing wrong because all my starters do the same thing. i have something f'ed up i just can't quite put my finger on it.

    any ideas?

My guess would be starter's assembled wrong.

Battery isn't reversed, is it? Also, if a battery is stone cold dead it is possible to charge it up the wrong way.
To fish or not to fish? What a STUPID question.

nope, starter is fine, i have 4 starters and they all do the same.
the battery cables are correct i checked several times, besides on the motor and on the battery the cables only go on one way. i even took the starter off and touched it directly to the battery still does the same thing.

i'm figuring my engine should be RH rotation most are. i just figured i would try to confirm that with some one.

if my starter turns left the engine should turn right. but if the starter turns to the left, witch it is. the drive does no engage. far as i can tell the drive only engages when turned to the right. witch if in that case my engine is left hand rotation.

i have hooked the starter up backwards so it does turn right. but the drive does not shoot up and engage for some odd reason. the drive works very smoothly the is no restriction.

my theory is,nothing is wrong, i'm just doing somthing wrong.

i put the battery on trickle charge over night and i'm lubing up the shaft on the starter. the battery was a little low.
i dunno maybe i'm reaching for straws here but i'm giving it a shot any way

At least you have a good sense of humor. I usually have to dodge cyber bullets after a remark like that.

What the heck was going on, if I might ask?
