What is an 81 GT 200 Johnson?
Good motor? I have located a deal on one and was wondering about the basic unit. Dependable ? Good power? can I plug it "in" to my 95 wiring without any problems?

I also found a 79, an 89 and an 96 that needs a powerhead. Whats a good base motor, "the good years"

81 GT is going to be a crossflow. the GT were pretty good, but they don't spin like newer motors.

no
such thing as an 81 GT 200 or anything GT in 81 for that matter. GT200 was first produced in 1986. GT150 & 2.6GT were first produced in 1983.

is the 2.6 a 200? 175? wHat? Are these "loopers"? what is a 3.0 liter

The 200GT was a looper. Wasn't produced until the late 80's I believe. The 2.6GT was a cross flow. Pretty much a hopped up 235. The original loop-charged motors were 2.7 liters in 86-87. They went to the 3 liter platform in 1988.
Also, the old crossflows were HP rated at the crankshaft, newer motors at the proshaft.

Sorry to butt into you thread , I was wondering about the 150GT motors, I have a chance to buy one that is a 1979 model that's on a buddies old hydrasport(busted transom and just doesn't fish anymore) bass boat, the motor runs good, my idea was to buy the motor of him and have it warmed up by monty's racing and put it on my Skeeter I'd have to change controls and I'm not crazy about it being a 79 model, my boat is a 98 but the price is right, I don't know anything about Johnson motors are these good motors to hop up or should I keep looking?

You have some incorrect information. There was no 150GT 150 in 1979. They did not come out till 1983. Maybe it's a newer model or just has a GT cowling on a 79-there is a difference between a 150 and a GT 150. I'd double check the model information on the casting core plug on the top of the engine and compare it with that on the transom bracket.
