[QUOTE=XstreamVking;1727639]My first fast boat was a 17' formula with a 150 merc. This was 1972.
I had a 1971 with a 135. 40's was pretty fast back then for a pleasure boat.Last edited by BigJohnson; 08-26-2009 at 06:51 PM.

I Started Smaller and Slower Than Most
I finally caught up with this thread, had to chime in.
I first had a boat with any concept of speed when I was nine and we put a 3hp Johnson on the back of the Optimst Pram my Dad built for me and I had been rowing for two years. I accidentally learned to get that thing planed off (with the angle drive and weedless twisted prop!) and that's what probably got me hooked.
In 1965 or so my brother (10) and I(12) "raced" Dad's 14' flat bottom round chine Marlin skiff (built in 55 or so) in the Gold Coast Marathon--Maimi to West Palm on Saturday, back on Sunday. 18 horse pressure tank Johnson, we saw maybe 24 or 25. We were one of the last 5 boats to finish, but placed 9th of 23 boats in our class--we got up and back, 14 didn't.
My first "real" performance boat was a 13' flat bottom Glen-L Tuffy that I built when I was 16. 2 cylinder Evinrude 40, couldn't afford the Merc 50 it should have had.
I saw some lawn chair comments earlier in this thread. My son Matt and daughter Christie went to what I believe was one of the first hotboat gatherings in Winter Haven, FL-maybe 99 or 2000--in my Vandal with sand chairs (hey, the Vandal was low) for seats. Worked fine except for planing off, which was a venture.Per Rock:
"Once I bought my first Hydrostream boating changed forever for me."
Per my hero Instigator:
"I try not to let common sense interfere w/my boat buying decisions."

1966 18' DUO with a brand new 1975 150 MERC, redecaled to 1976 115 hp decals. Once ironed out some, 48mph in the Alantic by the speedo. I beat up several V-8's, one with twins.

The day of my 14th birthday I passed my boat driving test, grandparents have a place in sw minnesota have to have a licence to drive under 18. Grandpa stoped by the local marina and picked me up an old 50's or 60's style aluminum boat with a 50 HP johnson on the back.. i though she was fast as hell..
My first purschase was a 78 Galaxie jet..Currently boatless, just got out of jetboats looking to go fast..

First fast boat
A $40 Mini Most sea flea w a $10 18 Johnson 2 blade Michigan bronze prop man this was fun.Did about 34
Next was a 14 Barracuda (Checkmate copy) cut transom 75 15' Hustler,did about 45- 50.
Next a Sunray ss480 (Glastron GT150 copy) with a 100 Rude little over 50 but pulled better for skiing
Next 16 Sidewinder Super w 140 Johnson hit 64 w 24 raker.
Next 19 J-Craft w 225 Johsnon was 67 now 80 after 22 years and 3 motors.
Love boats, speed on the water and have met some of the best people in the world because of boating.
Now it my kids turn. Each one has a boat that we have peiced together, they help work on them and look after them. I have just as much fun watching them as I do boating myself.Sean, 19 J-Craft ,225 Johnson
If everything seems to be going well, you have obviously overlooked something

what was your first "performance" boat?
Never owned one. Still waiting for my first go fast boat. Our baja is a slow tank. Looks nice and pretty, makes a good boat to watch fast boats from.
