    Identifying SSM model

This is the Super Speedmaster that came with my TII, my problem is the shaft length... I suspect it could be a TIIx unit ??

Second question around the same subject...

I got two different heights on the adapter/spacer ( got 3 3-3/4" and one 3" ), what type was originally used ??

I do need a driveshaft extension, what length ...

Arne, if someone doesn't have the measurements today, I can check one of mine tomorrow.

I've gotten myself confused on the two adapter heights also, since I've bought T2's now with both and one of my T1's was different from the others also. Until a year or so ago I always thought there were basically only two different driveshaft lengths for the SSM's, but the two different height adapters started showing up in old stuff I ran across, so obviously there were 3. We pretty well decided what the first and second design Twister/Twister1 mids were based on original engines but not sure exactly what the adapter difference was. Some people have said that the shorter on came only on the T2, but a Twister1 that I bought a long time ago had one also and the driveshaft didn't appear cut to accomodate it.

Although my literature suggests otherwise, my friend who was with Merc back in the Twister days is adamant that the Twister/Twister1 was ONLY available with the MC1 Speedmaster, and the SSM was an upgrade added later. I've never seen an MC1 with the shorter length driveshaft, so this would suggest that the Twister/Twister1's came with the taller adapter.

Since a T2X mid with it's thin gearcase adapter is roughly 4 inches shorter than a T1 with adapter, the driveshaft in that gearcase should be roughtly 4 or 3 1/4 shorter than other SSM's you have for comparison depending on adapter they were used with if it's a T2 unit. That's about the best I can do until tomorrow.

The driveshaft that is pictured is for a T2X. I won't even take a SWAG on the spacers. Like RM said, it was always confusing. Maybe he can get you the measurement.

    Adapter-Driveshaft

I just measured 2 adapters and driveshafts. Both adapters are 3.75'' and driveshafts are 17.75''.One was a 1250BP to SSM conversion, the other is on a T-2 ,both are the same.Glen

    Thanks for the answerers

Not the easiest engine to find info for, especially since it's close to 35 years AND a racing engine, lot and lots of different setups used ....

A parts manual for the TII would be nice , have already found the TIIx manual front the gallery but I am missing the TII specific parts.

Last TII sold from this site had a 3" adapter, but since I got 3 3.750" and only 1 3.00"... statistics tells me the 3.750" are probably the right one...

    driveshafts are 17.75''.
And mine are 14.50"... will then need a 3.25" shaft extension, anyone got any Part# for Mercury extensions ??

    No, it says 14/15

    • 1624-5249a6 - Assembly – Gear Case – R.H. -Complete, 1:1 TIIX
    • 1625-5249A7 - Assembly – Gear Case – R.H. -Complete,14:15 TIIX
    • .
    • 1625-5249A3 - Assembly – Gear Case – R.H. -Complete,1:1 TII + 15 inch
    • 1626-5249A4 - Assembly – Gear Case – L.H. -Complete,1:1 TII + 15 inch
    • 1627-5249A2 - Assembly – Gear Case – R.H. -Complete,14:15 TII + 15 inch
    • 1628-5249A5 - Assembly – Gear Case – L.H. -Complete,14:15 TII + 15 inch
    • .
    • 1631-4676A2 - Assembly – Gear Case – R.L. -Complete,1:1 Twister endurance
    • 1632-4676A4 - Assembly – Gear Case – L.H. -Complete,1:1 Twister endurance
    • 1633-4676A10 - Assembly – Gear Case – R.H. -Complete,15:17 Twister endurance
    • 1634-4676A11 - Assembly – Gear Case – L.H. -Complete,15:17 Twister endurance
