Question 22' Wellcraft Scarab Prop Ideas

    Hey Guys,

I recently bought a 22' Scarab with 7.4 454 with a Bravo 1 outdrive. I am having some issues with the prop. I am pretty sure there is a 26 pitch prop on it (couldn't find a number....??). What do you suggest?

    Thanks,
    Chris Eldridge

that sounds about right..........what is your speed and rpm you could figure it close that way if you run the #'s backwards..........

Not sure about the speed... I would say 55-60mph... I could turn 6000 rpms if i wanted to though. I was thinking that 4800-5200 is all I should?? I am used to my 1974 Powercat with a 150 Yamaha on the back, so I may have a lot to learn on the whole inboard deal...lol. Anyway, I didn't want to over do it on my first time out on the boat. I think the prop is too high pitched because my hole shot is HORRIBLE...I need to grab more water. It cavitates and i have to really work at it to plane the boat. Let me know what you think. Thanks for the help!

I'll try to fill in my location...

    Chris

okokok... A failed attempt say that it seemed as if i could turn it as fast as i wanted.... It was probably more like 5500 really. That is "IF" the gauge is working properly. Remember I just bought the boat and really don't know much about it.

26 bravo would be a good starting point. That motor should only turn 5500 max. It should have a rev. limiter set at 5250

How good of a hole shot would that give me though...? I'm curious if I can race this boat against some outboards.

Nope. Unless your blowin or sprayin don't. 22 foot with a big block in the back will be a pig until it plains out.

verify your prop, theres a # somewhere.... should be running a 21-23 pitch with that setup at 4800RPM or so in the 60MPH range + or -, with it lugging out of the whole i would def want to verify the tach, if it's lugging maybe you do have a 26 on there turning under 4000RPM, with a sterndrive running deep you want a 3 blade like a Mirage Plus for best overall.....

HARD TO TELL WHAT MIGHT CHANGE WITHOUT MORE INFO.....
ALUMINUM HEADS WITH WHAT HDWR????? VALVES, ROCKERS, CAM, CARB.??STOCK OR HP EXHAUST MANIFOLDS, INTENDED RPM FOR THIS MOTOR COMBO? DID YOU BUILD THE MOTOR OR HAVE IT DONE BY SOMEONE ELSE? IF SO WHAT HP DID THE BUILDER CLAIM WITH THE CHANGES THAT WERE MADE??
ALL OF THESE THINGS WILL BE IMPORTANT AS WILL YOUR ACCURACY IN ANSWERING QUESTIONS ASKED BY THE EXPERIENCED MEMBERS HERE.
IF SOMEONE ASKS WHAT RPM YOU CAN TURN MAX WIDE OPEN YOU NEED TO BE DEAD ON WITH YOUR ANSWER, NOT I THINK OR MAYBE I COULD I MIGHT HAVE IF....... ITS THE ONLY WAY TO GET A GOOD ESTIMATE BASED ON EXPERIENCE.... WITH THAT SAID, WHAT ARE YOUR LATEST RESULTS YOU CAN POST ....

1 PROP. TYPE, MFG, PITCH, PART NUMBER IF POSSIBLE.
2.BOAT. FULL GASS, OR EMPTY, GEAR, EXTRA WEIGHT...DRIVER ONLY
EXTRA WEIGHT WILL CHANGE RESULTS IN TESTING SO TEST THE WAY YOU RUN NORMALLY!!!!
    3. MOTOR SPECS,MODEL YEAR, HEAD MFG #, CAM, VALVES, ROCKERS, CARB, JETTING, IGNITION TYPE MFG, EST HP,THIS CAN NOT BE OVERLOOKED AS MANY PROBLEMS CAN STEM FROM AN IMPROPER MOTOR COMBO!!!! JUST BOLTING A SET OF ALUM HEADS ON AN OTHERWISE BASIC STOCK MOTOR WILL DO VERY LITTLE WITHOUT SOME OTHER UPGRADES TO COPLIMENT THE CHANGE....
OR JUST A BAD TUNEUP, BOTTOM LINE BE SURE THE MOTOR IS RUNNING STRONG AND AT MAX "RECOMENDED" RPM ....
WITH ANYWERE NEAR 350-400 HP THAT 22' SCARAB SHOULD RUN 70+ NO PROBLEM!!!
    1. MIRAGE PLUS 23"-25"
    2. HYDROMOTIVE 3-BLADE 24"-26"
    3. HYDROMOTIVE 4-BLADE 23"-25"
THESE ARE SOME GOOD BLADES TO TRY
