    Gear Ratio:1.81........ !!!!!!!!!! 300hp

    6000 rpm / 1.81 (yamaha)===== 3314 rpm in propeller

    6000 rpm / 1.75 (mercury)===== 3428 rpm in propeller !!!more mph!!!

    6000 rpn / 1.62 (mercury)===== 3.703 rpm in propeller !!! mooooore mph!!!!

    Mercury is the best gear ratio!!!!

    yamaha + gearcase mercury (1.62) = super yamaha !!!!

    Well, that's not really helpful... Merc is the best gear ratio for absolute top speed, but the yami with 1.62's can turn a 30-32p prop a lot better than the merc...

    Back on track, anyone proping their 300HPDI to turn 6K? What size?

    6000 is ok for that motor but not for long runs. 5800 would be ideal. They changed the rating on that engine a couple years ago to 6000rpm, they did not change the engine in any way though.

    Thanks, but why does the spec sheet say I have 1.81's? "06+ have 1.75's, but I though 05's were steeper....

    is it a 20" or 25" shaft.. the saltwater series ran steeper gears for better torque transfer for heavier loads.. the 20"ers were all 1.75

    4-16-2014. 25 years old today... the fishin boat doesnt look to bad for a classic does she

    2003 To 2005

    Thru 2005 Yamaha used 16 bit ecm. In 2006 they went to a 32 bit ecm. In 2007 they changed the ports in the block and called them series 2 . I have been told and I owed a 2005 and it does not make 300 hp.. I think that the 2007 and new Series 2 models do make 300hp but there is now way that the 2003-2005 made that much. By the way Hydro Tec can help you get over the 300hp mark. Good Luck

    After my warranty expires in 10/10 I will probably be giving Hydrotech a call. Until then, 285hp will be more than enough... thanks for all the replies. I pick it up Feb 18th! Can't wait!

    A Yamaha tech told me that actually they were any where from 261-285, and that guys always felt the "hot" ones.....Like what was posted above 250xs mercs were keeping up with the hot ones and passin the slower ones....Im sure though the Yammie torque will be more important than the total top end HP of the merc on that hull, of course that 100HP Hydrotec Power Shot will really wake her up....Youd think Wayne and the boys would have some simply tuning and bolt ons to make her the 300-310 of the new Series 2 models, or darn close....Please post pics, that is one of my dream boats, once the 300 HO comes out then Ill be squirmin like a school girl....

    not quite.. while there were som 300PM that only tipped 285 they for the most part were a bit closer to 300... but it was sad when a very slightly tweeked 250 EFI with a cowl mod would run with some of them...
