Hydrostream Vandal Restoration (Maple Leaf edition)

Since I was a little kid I have always been fascinated with Hydrostream's. Being that my nextdoor neighbour cousin's had 2 Hydrostream V King's I fell in love with there sleek design and there cool colour scheme's. Hearing them rumble down the lake, I would always run to the window to watch them race by. Since then have always been looking for a small hydrostream. Mostly looking at Voodoo's and the odd Viper or two. But they all had the same "look" to them, Not that I don't like Voodoo's or Viper's but I wanted somthing Different but still a along the line of a hydrostream. So one day my dad said a buddy of his had a Hydrostream. Went to take a look and the rest is history. So now I have a 1982 Hydrostream Vandal, Black with Red Metal Flake. Having read just about everything on Hydrostream and looking at the shape of this boat I knew that it would need a complete Restoration. Having no experience in this im going to need all the help I can get. But I don't think it will be that big of a problem thanks to S&F and all there helpfull members. So I will try and document step by step. Any comments and tips are apprecated. Thank you

First tip....buy a good face mask. Breathing FG dust sucks!!

Tip two...do as much work as you can but get Spaeth to put the core in. It will save you money and time in the long run.

It'll be a great project and something you'll always be proud of.

Well do. I know John Spaeth does great work, But I really want to learn this stuff. Thats the whole reason I got this. Its a project and I want to restore it myself and look back at all the work I've done.

You'll learn more then you can imagine from John and be gaurenteed that it's right. He's also the best place around for material. I do all my own work for the same reason...but...there are certain things that are best to have expert guidance in. You'll get to help so you'll learn plus you've got an expert to make sure it's done right. We're lucky to have a guy so close..

You don't need a lot of money to get started, but you will need it eventually. At least the Vandal is small so it doesn't use a lot of materials.

    Start with:
-Organized place to work. Ideally inside, but you'll want to move it outside for grinding.
-Build a jig, either on the ground as I did or on the trailer, to support the boat.
-Strip all the hardware off of it, bag and keep what you can.
-Tools: chisel, hammer, air chisel, hacksaw, skill saw, sawzall, and an angle grinder (I used 60grit disks). The chisel, grinder, and disks I got at Harbor Freight for under $30. Good breather mask and some tyvek suits.

I chose to split the deck off the hull. It makes working on the hull much easier. But it can be done by just removing the motorwell. Don't cut the transom skin unless it has some obvious damage or a previous repair.

While you're in demo mode read all the threads on here and figure out how you want to rebuild it. On a budget, I'd use BS1088 plywood, balsa, a locally-available shop brand epoxy resin, and biax cloth.
