    85 Baja/ 85 200 Merc

Hi all, newbie here. Just got a 85 18/12 ft Baja sunsport in mint shape equipped with what is supposed to be an 85 200 Black Max. No decals on the cowling which I was told was standard in this year.

The motor was well looked after, as is the boat-looks showroom for the year. The guy I bought it from claimes he just changed the impeller last year and only used it once after that.

I only get a max of 4 on water gauge, and it never pumps a hard steady stream of water. I am worried about frying the motor and will likely get the water pump done again.

Also I run a standard Quicksliver Merc SS prop-21 pitch, trimmed out 6200 rpm. Does that sound to high? That gets me 65 mph max on GPS? I honestly thot it would make 70??

I appreciate any advice on this motor and boat combo in terms of maintenance or performance.

I would try a higher pitch prop... maybe 23 or so.

Change the whole water pump first, before you cook the engine.

Is that a pad bottom boat? It will be hard to drive at 70 if it isn't, but it should be possible.

Solid mounts, foot throttle, dual steering, and as many props as you can borrow/buy.
