    Thumbs down Carbs

    I'd clean those carbs out good. Sounds like an idle circuit clogged.

    I just had the inline filter on my Dodge go bad. It was made of plastic and after a few years warped enough to allow dirt to bypass the paper cartridge. The idle circuits on the carb plugged up almost immediately from the dirt that got by. The idle became very rough if it would idle at all. Cleaned the carb out and installed a steel inline filter, runs great now.

    If your parts swapping I'd make a ground harness for all the electrical components to ground them directly to the neg battery cable mount point. Just use some solderless connectors and make one wire go from one component to the next grounding them all to one point.

    I would think it would be carbs too. Unless there is a wire rubbed through coming from the timerbase and when it advances it grounds on the block or somewhere. Not saying it couldn't happen, but I've never seen it though.

    Exclamation Idle

    Flywheel and regulator are part of the ignition as well. Maybe something is up there. Swap 'em and find out. Did you do the ground harness????? Noooooooo.

    I chased a problem like this once on my V4. Turned out there was a wire pinched between the block and the power pack when I tightened the power pack down.

    Put a timing light on the plug wires and see if a whole bank is going out or just one cyl. It might point you in the right direction. Install new plugs while your at it. Bosch WR9FP, step into the 21st century.

    Thumbs down Surface gap plugs

    Nope. That's a good thing. They're junk.

    Go with the Bosch or the NGK that you gap. Your idle and starting will improve considerably. I've used the Bosch on 3 different crossflows of my own now with great success. It's the first thing I change, that's how much they improve the way it runs.

    Also, run that motor at night with no lights and look around for sparks. Both primary and secondary (12v and spark plug)

    Thumbs up Try it first

    with one plug turning motor over by hand. The Bosch plug doesn't screw in all the way. Its a couple threads shorter than the stock plug so it sits about .125" below the inside surface of the chamber in the plug hole. This allows it to clear the piston easily.

    What heads are you running? Stock '85s are probably punch-bowl for sure. The 1980 heads are pretty tight;

    prefered 1980 2.6 #325638,9 125+ psi?? (uncut)

    '81 235 #327124,5 110psi (bath tub)

    '83 and later 99psi big time bath tub heads #328326,7 These are .030 deeper than #327124,5 (these came on my'84 XP 2.6 and had 99 psi)

    2.5 heads;
    '78-80 200hp 2.5 #323872,3 or #325556,7

    CCC #322328,9
