Joe's Viper Video from 1980
Hello Everyone,
I was cleaning the basement, and I finally found the video tape of my Viper shot in the summer of 1980. We filmed this footage on a weekday morning starting at about 6:00 AM. The video is not as clean as it used to be - but I guess letting the tape sit for 28 years didn't do it any good.
As have mentioned in other threads, I still have the 1500 XS, but not the hull. I have tried to track it down, but I cannot locate it. If anyone has any info, I sure would appreciate it.

That's quite a treat Joe, really brings back some memories. I think the younger guys who have not had the opportunity to really fly a boat like that with an inline have been denied an incredible experience.
Hard to believe we were so close yet never crossed paths. Of course, with you being faster, I wouldn't have liked you anyway

Hey Bernie,
I remember that if the boat started to chine walk, a hard right-hand snap of the steering would usually break it, and it would quickly settle and be rock-solid. That's probably what I was doing at 3:28.
Did you notice how I got a little too much air at 5:12? I would tap the floor mounted trim buttons with my left foot - looks like I tapped once more than I should have. Dumping the throttle like that always bounced me around a bit - almost out of the seat once. Of course I was 15 and weighed about 100 lbs at the time!
Thanks everyone for the great comments....

Great quality to be 28 year old footage. What was this footage shot with?
Also, what speeds were you running back then?Mr.Rude has a little Johnson!

My cousin Tom shot the footage with his JVC video camera with separate VHS deck. It was pretty high-end for the time.
For speed, all I had was the Medallion speedo with the pitot mounted down on the pad near the drain plug. It would bounce around so much, it was hard to say for sure. When I first joined S&F, I said that it went 80+, but there were some that said this was not possible. I never timed a run, and nobody even heard of GPS back then.
Good thing about the pitot though - when the speedo dropped to 0 MPH, you knew for sure it was time to hit the "down" trim button.
I did swap the gears from 2:1 to 1.87:1 (or was it 1.85:1?), and I was running an old Mercury 28p stainless two-blade with a cup - and I could still turn 6,500 RPM. Also ran lots of oil - something like 20:1, as recommended by many at the time.

28p prop @ 6500 rpm with a 1.87:1 gear and using 10% slip for the benefit of the doubt is 82 MPH. Very Nice !
