Thumbs down Evinrude sitting for years

Went to work on a 80's(forgot to get the year) Evinrude that has been sitting for a few years. It wasnt starting so the guy told he he put new plugs and fresh fuel before I showed up. I checked for spark good in both cylinders. I checked the fuel and drained quite a bit of bad fuel from the bowls and pumped the ball until I had fresh fuel coming out. I also did a compression test 170psi in both cylinders. The motor cranks strong but isn't even trying to turn over at all. Any thoughts? I appreciate it. Motor is 55hp

Those flood easily.... any fuel on the plugs after cranking it? Jets are probably clogged with varnish.

No fuel on the plugs at all. I do think the carbs are clogged but thought it would at least attempt to sound like it would turn over.

Sea foam will not melt varnish when used only in the gas. the carbs need to be soaked and air through out after the jets are removed. I had a hard piece of something chip the paint on garage door it was so jammed up. Rick

Sea Foam, OMC Engine Tuner, Merc Power Tune.... all basically the same stuff. you need to soak the carbs and all parts real well with the stuff and as Rick said, blow them out real well with compressed air. I use small music wire to help clean the passages..... Take your time and do a good job.... it's a bitch to have to do it twice

Thanks for the replies I already started cleaning them. There is varnish in them so thick it's like mud. I was told to soak them in safety clean its suppose to work real well. These are going to be hard to get right with just carb cleaner and compressed air. I do like the music wire idea I will try that.

I'm telling ya man....... Engine tuner will melt the varnish way faster than the Safety Kleen.............. and it will not strip the protective coating from the carbs
