1993 225 evinrude
25'' all stock never been apart. only thing we have done is took airbox off and gained a little rpm on the top side it's on a 20' seacraft. what mods can we do without going into motor that will make it run better and reliably. also whats a safe rpm to turn it for long periods of time we run good oil and 93 octane always. right now it turns 6300 and sounds good. Also ive seen alot of these engines with dual cooling hoses is that something we should do or what and if so how do we go about doing it. thanks in advance guys.

Carefull running without the airbox. That's putting a serious lean on those carbs. You should probably re-jet to a larger size if you wanna do that. The hoses you're talking about are for dry stacking. Essentially what youre doing is dumping the cooling water straight from the block as not to restrict exhaust down the mid and out the lower. You can try the big bore 1986 carbs for a bit of bolt-on power but they can be tough to dial in. Lots of stalling and spitting at idle. You can go with the high compresion heads and bump the comp up to around 130psi. Of course only use 93 with that compression. Don't go much higher unless you wanna use race fuel. What prop are you using? 6300rpm sounds pretty healthy but I wouldn't turn it much more than that for a long period. Unfortunately, theres not too much more you can do besides basic set-up and props without tearing into that engine.

Dave it's on a 20' seacraft. motor has little hours on it and my brotherinlaw never floors it he's pretty easy on it. we are goping to take the mid section off to paint it and clean up the wiring under the cowling it has the vro disconnected and we are running a holley red. runs good and really cool. how hard is it to drystack and is it worth it for a boat combo like this. also what can the timing be bumped up to and do they make a tuner for this motor that would work nice. and can the liner be taken out of this motor without opening up the exhaust and making it loud. we mainly fish on this boat but cant have another seacraft pass us. also i have done a couple of wfo runs then checked the plugs and they look nice not lean not rich so jetting seems to be ok.

But they look nice how should i be checking them. i run it to the top side and then chop the throttle and ing. and pull plugs they come out a light golden color like tan. engine also pisses luke warm. how much timing can we go with i thought about bumping timing cutting heads and doing some reeds. and calling it a day. engine has a problem that when your cruising 3000-3800 it surges like if it was running to rich or out of gas. what could that be runs hard on the top side could that be too much fuel pressure holley red is 7psi. also all ing components and wiring harness is new.which wires can i get rid of under the cowl to simplify the harness and make everything nice and neat.

Virgil, I wouldn't really recommend the dry-stack for that boat. If only because without the cooling water running through the mid, it can get very hot. That nice new paint on the mid will start cracking and flaking off in short time.
If it were my boat, I'd have the heads cut or replace the stockers with some 2.7 liter heads. The compression bump won't give you much top-end but the mid range punch is significant. The stock heads are probably holding around 100lbs. if you push it up to 125-130, you'll see a difference.
The main wiring harness should just be one big plug. On a 93 it should be the big red rubber boot.
Jack the motor to the sky and keep an eye on water pressure. Keep as much weight aft as possible. Let me know if u want to try some different OMC props. I've got a few and I know Barneys got a bunch too.
