Ran...
Dextron III in my old Sonic for 7 yrs w/no issue and that was with the Capilano helm and seperate rams on both motors.
Thanks for the info too Rex. Was debating what to use in my STV until reading your comments.

Hooking up a seastar tomorrow, do I need to get all the old fluid out or can I just add the dextron 3? Didn't know if the two would mix.

My hydraulic guy recommended against dextrin, air entrapment issues and doesn't lubricate as well. He recommended #32 hydraulic oil, been using it for years

Geez guys, it's DEXRON ffs. Sorry, I'm a transmission mechanic and ya'll are sounding like backyard mechanics when I know your not! Interesting point about expansion/contraction issues.

I'm 90% sure my system has 2 stroke oil in it from the last trip out when a hose fitting nut broke and I had to replace it floating down river after I lost all steering ...
only oil I had in the boat at the time was the merc 3 gallon reservoir of 2 stroke...
used what was handy...lol
that was 2 years ago ill fix it when it leaks or needs bled again... lolLast edited by 150aintenuff; 05-24-2017 at 01:51 PM.

Had a few hundred new systems go out the door with Dextron ll/lll. No issues. On new closed systems, simply rebleed after 24 hours, after all micro bubbles have risen to the highest point in the system.

Had sam results as T Rex. Dextron 3 gets a lot harder life in an auto trans than a Real simple sealed steering system. The over the top price of sea star oil and the no warranty reasons are just smoke and mirrors to justify the price.

I use non detergent 30 weight oil in my tilt and trim without problems, change it every three years. Anyone try it in a seastar steering or is it too heavy? How about just regular or synthetic power steering fluid?

Hydraulic jack oil would work too. Only thing the seastar oil has going for it are anti corrosion and anti foaming agents. If you used any type of cheaper oil in it and changed every few years it would be more than adequate imo.
