steering fitment problem
alright i'll try to explain this without a pic. where the dual cables come through the steering tubes and stick out the port side there is a bracket that hooks them together. what is this bracket called? anyway the cables are spaced too narrow to go into the bracket. are there different spacings made? i'm bumfuzzled

I think I understand what you are talking about. I have seen two styles of dual cable mounts from mercury. One is cast, and one is stainless flat stock that is drilled and bent. It seems that the cast units placed the second steering tube closer to the pivot than the stainless ones. Im going soley on memory which is not good in my case. I will say it is very possible you have miss-matched parts. Did your parts come from a kit? or are you like me and they came from under your work bench.

bingo
i think you nailed it right up to the parts literally coming out of a small pile on the workbench. i have the cast piece and it is spaced too wide for the cables so i guess i need the other piece. what is it called so i can find one

I've only seen them offered as a kit but I haven't bought anything in years. You can probably find someone who has the part you need. What is the measurement between your cables? I switched to hyd. last year like many, so the parts should be available.
If I have anything that can help I'll let you hold it for shipping cost.
Good luck man!

steering
thanks guys for the help. we had one that i had done some fab work on that we can use. the cables were about 3/16 too close together so we took off the steering tube bracket that was on there(it had little 1/4 inch bends in it that shifted the cables closer together. the one on there now is straight across. now there are two bad trim solenoids to deal with. its always something. thanks again ya'll
