drag crank, has a coller or spacer between bearing and crank is this normal?????

i have a 2.5 drag crank large bearing upper and there is a coller or spacer around the crank , it goes between the large bearing and the crank!!!!!!
is there a part number for this coller or spacer i would like to get a new one or is there a bearing that fits without the spacer ?????

    Cool Yes

Its normal. The early double roller 5208 bearing ( big upper bearing) cranks with the tungstan heavy metal weights welded into the top (1996 and newer), had a sleeve. Basically Merc was using up the cranks that had already been ground to size for the older bearing ( the roller type). They then cut the upper throw, added weights and pressed the sleeve and bearing on. Later when those were gone, they started grinding the upper OD of the upper journal to match the 5208 bearing. Absolutely normal, and no you can't find the sleeve very easily. It is available, but hard to find.

There is a crank shop in California...

I do not know the name (but I can get it) that will add the material to the top bearing surface so you can use it without the shim.

My understanding is the shim has always been a problem.

I would NOT trust ANY crank that has been repaired ( built up via welding and turned down ) on any high performance application where the fix was applied above the upper middle main bearing ! ( #1,#2, rod journal or flywheel and seal area ) I have had ZERO luck with repairs living in those areas in the past.. AND David used to warn of the fixes in those spots on the V-6 mercury cranks and HIGH failure rates..

I have written response posts about a successful way for me and my customers and you can use those cranks with no heat applied at all . It intails machining down the bearing OD area on the crank, pressing on a thicker "Press able" 4130 sleeve with an interfearance fit (the stock shim is tissue paper thin and sometimes impossible to now press on the scared up OD on the crank without wadding up ) then turning the OD of the new sleeve down to the correct standard size ID of the SKF 5208 W CI bearing to be pressed with an interfearance fit. I have several of these cranks running in ultra high RPMed drag motors for years...

i contacted marine crankshaft and they want to weld it , my crank is not damaged but the spacer is a little loose and it would be cheaper to just get another spacer i thinkl

this sounds like what i want to do , the one good thing is my crank top journal isnt damaged the spacer is just a little loose and i dont like it !! and would like to get a new spacer maybe a few this way when i tear down the motor every few years i can just change out if it is a little loose .
the problem is just dont know the part number or who has them????????!!!!!

Mercury at one time had them BUT you had to "know" somebody to get one
( sleeve ) ... They would much rather sell you a new crank than sell you a $10.00 sleeve to put on a mis sized POS crank they palmed off on some of their customers...
