I have searched many different places, but saw several references that this is the right place to find answers to this issue. Recently purchased a 225 '99 Optimax on a used boat, has had heads re-built, and runs great except that it seems to be burning oil at about 25:1. In burning 40 gallons of gas, I used just under 2 gallons of oil. No smoke, no problems, but the oil is just getting used up at a very surprising rate.
I run at 4200-4300 most of the time. Lots of cruising at 28kts. Not a ton of idle time. I have put about 30 hours on the motor in the past 6 months since buying. Total time on engine is about 500hrs, but was rebuilt less than 100 hours ago.
I have a slot available at the local dealer to get it checked out, but they don't have a slot open for the next couple of weeks.
Am I wasting my time, and just need to live with 25:1? It seems about twice the rate it should be using, which is why I am wondering if it might be stuck in a break in mode.Last edited by MarMar; 06-24-2013 at 10:37 PM.

Check the electric oil pump on the starboard front side of the motor for leakage.(lot of hoses coming from it) Had one start leaking a crap load of oil on one of my opti's.
