It is natural to question your own mortality after a tragic event, especially when it occurs first hand, the reality is sometimes too much to handle...
You KNOW, in your heart Dutch, Phil would want you make a great pass, JUST SO HE CAN WATCH OVER YOU FROM ABOVE
YES, I feel the sorrow for what happened and it's effects on those at the scene, BUT I know Phil's love for this sport and that he would not want to have a negative effect on itEldest Moron Brother

Against the unblemished glass that is Lake Sunapee first thing in the morning, Phil would be up getting his boat ready for his first ride of the day. Often times, I would be down on the dock with him, enjoying my first cup of tea. I never could muster the courage to go for a ride with him. " Come on, I'll be gentle " he'd laughingly coax, ( Yeah right ! ).
" No thanks " I'd say, " I'll watch from here ". He was the only soul out there, sometimes that early on in the day....and he was fun to watch. He was in his glory! The last week of July at Davis Cabins will be forever altered without Phil's presence. I know that all of us will think of him every time we walk by #16, and hear the faint echoes of him tinkering with his motor.
Rest in peace my friend, You will always be in our hearts.
Sue has asked that we post the funeral arrangements for Phil:

I can't think of any other thread on scream and fly that brought out so many first time posters. That tells you what kind of person Phil was. He will be missed by many. Godspeed Phil.

Phil was another long time customer to turn friend. We have know Phil for almost 20 years and spoke with him almost weekly. It is a very tragic loss for us all. He really had the need for speed and was thinking about it all the time, it is truely what made him happy. Phil will be sadly missed around here.

I read a message on a mans tombstone and it said "there are 2 dates on here with a dash in between and I just want to be remembered by the dash in between" I never met Phil but I think this would apply after reading all the kind words about him on here, God Speed Matt

Phil
I didn't know Phil. Up till now he was just another member here at S&F. Looking at the pics and reading what those who knew him have said, he must have been one hell of a guy. Sounds like he lived his life to the fullest. I only hope that when it's my time, that I leave behind as many good friends as Phil has. May God bless him and his loved ones. Ray
Some days it's hardly worth chewin through the restraints!

Very sad
I didn't know Phil, but I was going to meet him the next day. Sounds like I missed out.
I do know Dutch and Helmut....The impact you feel is called secondary trauma or witness trauma. I experienced it in 1999 when a guy slid-off a boat at the ramp, 25 feet from dry land and died...30 feet in front of me.
It is sobering and a time to reflect on what is important. I respect whatever choices you make from this experience.
From what Matt has told me there was nothing else anyone could do to change this tragic outcome. His quick response and the actions of therest of the group should be applauded. I only hope if I ever need help, they are around.
There is a psalm that reads, "it is better to go to the house of mourning than praise". My understanding of this is we are given a chance to learn how to live from those that have died.
Peace. GreggSea ya, Sleekster

Good bye Phil
My dad used to say, "If it ain't broke don't fix it" and I would take it apart anyway. Phil would take it apart to make it go faster, put it back together and then break it going faster. This applied to his STV, his truck, his race boat, the Daytona and many many more vehicles. He was a talented mechanic, bodyman and driver.
This summer he had a little R/C boat that he put in the lake in front of his cabin. Naturally he wasn't completely satisfied with it, he asked me what we could do to make the batteries last longer, should the motor be this hot? etc. Phil was constantly assessing what he could do to make whatever better and faster. When I told our other friends about Phil's R/C boat and how he had broken half of a prop blade off, we all laughed. It was the epitome of Phil. It didn't matter what scale, he was always doing the same thing.
Phil leaves a large void in many lives where there used to be a kind guy with crazy hair who loved to go fast.
We will all miss him terrribly.
