    project: 1974 Wriedt Spoiler

    <HR style="COLOR: #d1d1e1" SIZE=1><!-- / icon and title --><!-- message -->
    Just got a 1974 Wriedt Spoiler with 455 Olds and berkely jet C. Will be posting more pics on here as project goes along. Jet drive was supposed to have been rebuilt just before boat was put up and sat for 10 years. Would it still be wise to take out jet drive and put in new seals and bearings and gaskets?? Any comments suggestions welcome!!! More pics later this evening

    oh yeah BTW the motor is in dire need of overhaul, that is the reason it sat for 10 years. So motor will be pulled out. There is no interior. Ripping carpet up to check stability of floors.

    Wow I remember when mine looked like that.

    When I found mine it was in an old barn. The nose was hanging out and it was white as could be from the oxidation. Lots and lots of work later she's back on the water. Look forward to talking to everybody.

    A picture.

    Bare with me. I can paint a boat but have a hard time resizing a picture to make it fit.

    Well I did the transom about three years ago. What a job........ I noticed a soft spot in the floor this summer, so I know what's next.

    More Work-- Rust

    How worried should I be with the amounts of rust in cylinder walls and on pistons. Can not get the crankshaft to rotate at all.

    Siezed nicely.
    Pull the crank then flip the block back over spray the pistons with a ton of PB Blaster
    and knock them out. Until you get um out no telling how bad the rust chewed into the
    walls but, it looks real ugly. If it doesn't look too bad bore it etc... and start buying parts.
    BTW what do the heads look like.

    On a lighter note: What I've found is most of these Olds engines installed in jet boats are in pretty good shape. Judging by the looks of your boat it is probably very much like mine. It was bought in 74, and used a couple of years which didn't put a whole lot of time on the engine. Then for some reason it found its way to a barn where it was parked and forgotten about. You'll probably find the crank journals in good shape, and when you get the pistons out you'll probably find the bores are stock. What I'm trying to say is that your at ground zero with a lot of room for machining. If the engine had been in a 442 it would have a lot more wear on it.
    Look for block cracks! Hope the engine didn't sit up for it's hibernation with water in it.
