    Taylor Jet Boat

I am looking for a Taylor Craft Jet Boat to buy. A 20 ft from '79 until they went out of business in '81. Or if anyone knows who bought the molds from the Oscar Taylor of Taylor Boats in Cushing, OK?

Taylor boats, i.e Big T Fiberglass in Cushing didn't go out of biz in '81...they didn't fold until much later in the 80's, might even have been early 90's..we were a Taylor dealer in the mid 80s. Oscar allegedly owed a sales rep a bunch of money and he and a partner - Ervin Capps of Condor fame iirc - "borrowed" the 20LP molds and produced a few modified LP's under the "Laker" brand...the story then goes that Oscar found where they were laying the boats up and took a chainsaw to the molds ..which is a tragedy because the 20 LP is a classic and was a fantastic boat.

Vanderhyde Marine in "downtown" Cedar Springs, Mich.

We outgrew that location and built a new facility between Cedar Springs and Rockford on M-57 called Rockford Marine a few years later.

Where are you located in Indiana?

Our Taylor factory rep was a great guy; I believe he lived just north of Ft Wayne.

Those were good times. They were an awesome boat for the money. There was an LP on our lake last weekend and they are still great looking and performing boats….it was like a breath of fresh air to see a boat without a rollbar on it.

I live in Fort Wayne. This is Steve the Rep. & owner of Laker Boat. I set up Dave, How he doing & is he still in marine business??. Where the heck did story about Oscar taking a chain saw to the molds come from ( Never Happen ) LOL. The LP would still be a seller today was a design that doesn't go out of style. Taylor did go out of business in 1981. I help start up back again in 1983. He sold to a person or a group of people in Mexico the company sometime in 1988. They went under and 2 more people started building the LP's one was Wyatt Earp Boats. see info on Taylor History on http://thetaylorboatsroost52059.yuku...y#.VZ0_ibWPSSo

    Steve,

    This is Dave.

No, we're no longer in the marine biz. We sold the marina to some people who ran it into the ground, went broke, lost all the franchises, etc etc. All that hard down the drain...

I can help you out with a new Chevy though, LOL , dad and I own the Chevy dealership in Sparta which is only a few miles from where you remember our boat store in Cedar Springs.

When you set us up … 1985? 1986? We weren't aware that Taylor had went bust once already and that we were part of the 2nd generation of Big T.

I thought I remembered you saying the reason you quit with the Laker version of the Taylor LP was the molds were damaged by a chain saw because the Taylor bunch was pissed that you had the molds (and were making the LP with the changes Taylor should have incorporated) ??

I remember seeing you at a drag boat race somewhere . Kankakee ? Momence ? Maybe Dayton? years ago but I lost your contact info and we fell out of touch.

Those were good times…we put a bunch of Taylors up on the river and there's still several running around. I see the LP and SJ boats most. I don't know what happened to the 20' family style bowrider or the 24 offshore. I haven't seen one in years. The 24 was a cool boat but spooky…narrow beam, high freeboard, and azz heavy …they were a wave crusher but you wanted to be careful with the tabs or you had handling issues.

Do you remember the guy who had the V8 Johnson on the 20 LP ? The one that broke the bracket at speed and the motor got in the boat with him? He's one of our salespeople and still talks about that boat and that day…but I guess if a 300HP chainsaw got in the boat with you, you'd probably tend to remember the occasion.

Hope all is well & if you're ever in the neighborhood give me a shout and I'll meet you for a burger and beer or 3

    dave
