They are still locked by the bottom. The rod bearings aren't much of an issue really.

Best motor I ever owned was a 1980 175hp 2.0L Merc. First year for the big single trim ram. I never had one issue with that motor after three years of racing. I had it on a 17ft Kona V bottom. Not the fastest hull out there but I learned a lot because I didn`t have to worry about break downs so I was able to concentrate on my set up and driving.

I had a '78 2.0 175....ran it on Nitrous Oxide for 4 years! Never had an issue with h exception of drive shafts and prop shafts!
I did have to run 24v to the starter where it would crank in cold weather....no issues there either!WillySteve Hendricks

If the material is the same for both (8620H vacuum-degassed -- bearing quality steel) then the strength should be the same for both assuming the cross-sections are the same. I like the grain structure better in the forging. The hardening should be the same. I'm a mechanical engineer not a metallurgist. So this is not a very professional opinion.
I will say that for a 2-stroke rod, its not the strength of the rod that's so important, it's the quality of the material and the heat treatment of the surface the rollers ride on that really counts. 2-stroke rods almost always start to fail by spalling on this area first.Last edited by rckid74; 01-04-2018 at 10:26 PM.

Jerry, and this is just my two cents, but when we were making upwards of 3000 622-4850 rods per day at tmes, plus your 624- rods, there would have been no way carving them from billet - Modern Drop Forge in Blue Island IL was our forging vendor, and very good at it also. I think the prior vendor was out of Rock Falls Illinois and there were times we had to 100% inspect incoming rod forgings due to misstrikes, mismatch, poor fill, straightness, you name it. Modern had thier act together - if there was a price increase it was offset by the quality of the forging. We spent more time fighting our own copper plating mistakes and the silver strike vendor - Electroplating. Ole' Buck Bucarma - he used to carry his supply of silver plate in the trunk of his Cadillac!Last edited by bernie; 01-05-2018 at 02:52 PM.

I was told by a Mercury rep some 30 years ago it was just what you said. Machine-Freeze- Snap with a cone, found a video that might be what is done today?
