I have had several of those motors and the only problem i ever had with them is if it is eqipped with twin VRO pumps premix you fuel. the VRO pumps work well as fuel pumps but not so good as fuel oil mixing pumps like they should. Other than that there strong motors.

v8 john rudes are some of the best motors they ever made, IMO... As long as you can afford to feed them. LOL.

Give it to the right guy.....,

hand him a die grinder and come back in an hour.
Maybe the only motor on the planet that will make 400 HP's on pump gas. Some of them have porting from the factory capable of 8K R's.
Do your home work before you **** can it based on what the experts are telling you.
They are very heavy and used to be wayyy out there but not anymore! Almost all the direct injected 225+'s are 550 lbs or more. That by the way is the same weight as a V-8
One last thing to consider is...........if the rumors of a V-8 E-Tech are real (I would never say such a thing) all of a sudden you have the basis of one Bad Mammer Jammer

I owned a 41' Corsa w/triple 300GT Junkson .............I meen Johnson engines back in the day, sure the tork was unbelievable.........I emphasize"was", cause they suffered overheating & the VRO pumps sucked, & could'nt keep alive for long.
V.R.O. STANDS FOR V. ery R. isky O. peration !!!!!! Just research their track record ! How long were they around? Man save yourself the grief! If someone comes claiming those engines are great, offer to sell it to them and see if they put their $$$$$ where their mouth is! Not being a hater just keeping it real. That was my personal opinion, backed up by the bad experience I went through. There ain't nothing like a MERCURY ........... MERC4LIFE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
    Peace! FIG

The ignition is weak and the carbs are bad but at the end of the day the lower unit is the show stopper if you want speed.Mine burned 50% more gas at 90 than a 300promax on the same boat.

last post on this thread for me but...

FYI, V-8's had the same ignition, same carbs, and same VRO pumps as the V-4's and 6's that are still running every where.
I've run the 4's and 6's since the 80's and NEVER lost a VRO, carb and have only replaced one stator (not sure that was even the problem) on one motor that entire time.
The FrankenRude (V-6 looper) ran those same junk carbs and ignition and with the rev limiter removed (box freagin stock ignition and carbs) turned 8500. (I'll buy all the early junk V-8 carbs you guys can come up with!)
    I have a friend running a V-8 on a 22' Talon that is running just a tick under 100 @ 7K + w/a near stock motor.
Another friend w/a 25' Action Center Console w/twin V-8's that has also been near 100 depending on state of tune.
He's had that boat and those motors for I think at least ten yrs. And motors have been together for a long ass time!
I was down here last Spring and picked up an '84 I think (one of the first yrs), V-8 from a scrap pile.
I took it home, pulled off all the butchered up wiring (from a previous life), ran fuel to it and jumped it while it was laying on it's side on the trailer.
    It started!
My buddy w/the Talon has that motor now and I saw it dissasembled at the Rumble last month. The entire power head could pass as new!
He only opened it up to add 100 or so extra HP's.
Most people that bad mouth them either got one that had already been screwed with by someone that didn't know what they were doing or never gave them a chance. (how many people can sink 8 carbs??that's all it takes to make em run like ****!)
So again, you guys with all the bad experience and wealth of knowledge with these things remember I'll do you a favor and take all the junk you have laying around! You're right, they're all crap!
Thats why they only built them for what?? 10 or 12 years?
The guy just asked for help.
