Ditto. Locktite does make a similar product, don't remember the #, but I bought some the other day and can get the # tommorw if you need it. I usually get it at the omc dealer I use but didn't want to go by there. locktite probably makes it for omc... don't over do it on that stuff, when you squeeze the block togther, a little goes a long way. a little bead, smaller than a pencil lead is plenty.

I have used 518 Locktite Red Gel Seal for years with no issues .... With a zillion successfull rebuilds with 0 leaks until the other day ... My Merc dealer friends use the Merc. Brown gunk sealer and I also have that on hand too ???? Dunno but last week had an engine with a slight weep up high at the split cases right at the top case bolt port side BUT the motor ( before I got it to rebuild ) had a top bearing failure and smoked the top of the block SOOO bad it had to be converted to the new style crank and be machined. ( It vibrated SOOO bad that I was told it broke most the studs in the bottom of the block smoking the crank and upper block, SCARY ! ) .. The motor did NOT leak running on my stand for an hour during initial breakin nor would it leak after it was installed on customers down housing running an hour longer on the hose. Only seep occured when a load was put on it ! I ate the freight both ways and tore it down again and applyed the Merc. brown wonder goop and the jury is still out ! I'm guessing a cranked front half if this massive amount of this brown goop that I applyed to the whole split case area doesn't solve this issue. Without a load it will run forever with no issues at all , dry as a bone and as soon as any load is applied it has a slight weep....

All I've ever used, never had a problem. Whatever you use, use it sparingly and thin.

Use permatex aviation form a gasket sealer, you can get it at any napa store, part #765-1210 , comes with brush in can ,so you can brush on both halfs, Jeff

Don't use Gel Seal on the mating surfaces. Gel Seal will actually shim the surfaces and as Jay saw can lead to bearing failure. I use only Perfect Seal on my motors.

    Jeff ,
Guess we will have to agree to disagree on the gel seal subject ! And that only ONE product will work successfully. The bearing failure was before I touched the engine and it was put together with the perfect seal because I had to clean the crap up when it arrived at JSRE ! LOL........If you would ask five different mechanics what they used as a case sealer you would get at least 3 different answers and that was proven in this post..

    Gel seal ( 518 loctite )
    Mercury Goop
    Permatex aircraft sealer

There are many products on the market that work and many have been successfull with each. I happen to have been using the 518 Locktite SUCCESSFULLY for 14 years others may like other things ...it's seem to be a matter of opinion... Like Ford and Chevy.......

Loctite 518 is the only way to go, perfect seal is a thing of the past.
