Mercury Launching New 75-115 hp FourStroke Outboards

Mercury Launching New 75-115 hp FourStroke Outboards

FOND DU LAC, WI. (February 16, 2006) – When it comes to mid-range outboards, reliable and tough are the first and second requirements. Please welcome the outboards that redefine the terms, the new 75, 90 and 115 EFI FourStrokes from Mercury Marine.

The new models were unveiled at the opening of the Miami International Boat Show, Feb. 16 in Miami Beach, taking their place among the most complete line of four-stroke outboard engines in the marine industry. Mercury has 23 individual FourStrokes from the ultra-light 2.5 hp to the now-legendary 275 hp Verado.

These rugged new models are the eighth, ninth and 10th engines born of Mercury’s Verado platform strategy. Though they don’t share the Verado name, which is reserved for the supercharged members of the family, they do share a common engine architecture and have many common components, making these 1.7-liter stalwarts easily the most durable in their class. For instance, the connecting rods and internal bearings the new engines employ are exactly the same as the ones in every single Verado, and the engine block is virtually identical to the one used by the 135, 150 and 175 Verado. In short, with many components built to withstand the rigors of a supercharged environment, these naturally aspirated, inline four-cylinder power plants are structurally far stronger than they will ever need to be.

The new midrange FourStrokes are built with state-of-the-art manufacturing technology. In-process validations within their world-class, purpose-built manufacturing line ensure that every engine is thoroughly checked before it ever comes off the line.

The engines are controlled by an electronic control module (ECM) that features a Motorola microprocessor. This processing power provides precise control over the fuel management system and engine combustion processes, constantly monitoring engine sensors and making necessary adjustments to maintain optimal function. Full SmartCraft functionality is standard in the mid-range FourStrokes, providing a comprehensive boat and propulsion monitoring system that supplies detailed engine status and performance data. This allows the user to optimize engine performance, increasing safety and enjoyment of the boating experience.
Naturally, the new midrange EFI FourStrokes feature instant and reliable turn-key starting, so they start quickly and easily in all kinds of weather – without any choking or manipulation of the throttle. Best-in-class starting reliability results from the self-priming fuel system, which includes a fuel supply module (FSM) that was borrowed from Verado.

The 75, 90 and 115 EFI FourStrokes are exceptionally quiet and smooth across the rpm range, with best-in-class sound level and quality at idle. This is achieved through the implementation of an Integrated Idle Relief Attenuator (IIRA) and features of the new cowl system. This system combines Verado-inspired styling outside, with air ducting developed by virtue of computer aided engineering (CAE) inside to enhance performance. The cowl is made from engineered polymers, which are lighter and stronger than conventional cowling materials. It also employs acoustic foam and a unique duct design to reduce sound emissions for a more enjoyable boating experience.

The new Mercury 75, 90 and 115 FourStrokes will be available in spring 2006.
