Lars, Thanks for posting the timeline of the large OMC motors. There is so much general confusion about these...people who weren't there always getting them mixed up. To further clarify, is the 1978 3-liter looper motor the "727" motor? Any idea about how many might have been made.
Thanks,
Roger
CCC vs 727 gearcases look close!!!!! my CCC GC is on the right with the stub shaft

The V6 3 liter looper with fuel injection was never sold to race drivers. OMC let the top drivers use the engines to be returned after the season.
I know Cees van der Velden did never understand "to be return to OMC".. :)..so he saved one or two. I have been told Greg Jacobsen have one but I have not seen it myself.

Jake posted a few photos of his looper but I am not sure which capacity it was.
One of my buddies was working on the CCC race program in the USA when they were being made, he said sand cast blocks and weeks of hand grinding, that tells me very few were made or ever going to be
It's the 2 liter looper powerabout. The 3 liter looper is a much bigger block.
http://svera.se/blogg/pictures-of-the-very-powerful-omc-2-liter-purpose-built-race-engine/
The first picture is of a OMC V6 cross flow..similar block to the first CCC 2.4 liter, engine (different front) There is no way to machine this block in to a looper. You need a completely different block/casting.
The second picture is the OMC V6 2 liter looper block.

I too have never heard about a 2ltr x flow
Well the first OMC V6 in Paris 1973 was cross-flow powerabout..

Attachment 378119Attachment 378120 All the 2.0 litre crossflow engine blocks were painted red the same as the Johnson Stinger red outboards the OMC plant at Brugge had 5 in 1976 the drivers that raced them were Peter Thorneywork. Alf Bullen.Steve Pinson.Neil Gregg.Hans Pelster.the first one I raced ran 110mph but Peter Thorneywork ran a small 15ft sprint Cougar with a one to one lower unit that ran 120mph but this was not a rough water boat.Paris OCT 1976 OMC had around 7 - 2.0 litre Loopers for this race sent from the US Pelster tested 1 and they put him the wrong prop on he ran it straight past 10000 rpm and he blew it up in practise. They also built a sleeved down 2.0 litre version of the the 2.5 crossflow engine block.I tested this engine out in practise but they decided not to run it.Paris 6hr race 1976 No 85 was a Cougar boat powered by a 2.0 litre looper Evinrude .The yellow boat was the 15ft Cougar sprint boat powered by a Johnson 2.0 litre crossflow that did often outrun the Merc 2.0 litre injected engines.
Thanks for posting Steverino.
Hey Steverino..look close at your picture with boat #85..I added a red arrow..its an inboard..Maybe good old Jackie..!!
The #85 boat with the 2.0 litre looper Evinrude crashed bad early in the race if I remember right.
I also remember all the testing in Brugge before the Paris race 1976. I drove a factory OE boat and Paul Kalb was in over his head with all the boats testing in Brugge.

Was the 73 v6 xflow a production block sleeved down?
So same as the one that came out 76?
No there was no production V-6 1973. The first production V-6 came 1976.
http://svera.se/blogg/facts-about-la...-and-eighties/
The 2 (two) V-6 that were introduced at Paris in 73 were sand cast cross flow blocks sleeved for 2l. The cranks were actually V-4 cranks cut and welded together. Most of the parts came from the production V-4 with the obvious special V-6 parts either hand made or sand cast. By the way, they were not "red" they were painted ROTARY orange. We had lots of spray cans of paint in the race group.
OMC never built a 2 liter production V-6 so every motor for the UIM
ON class was custom built.
As an exclusive Evinrude dealer I fully understand why OMC
racing preferred to build race engine for the UIM OZ class instead.
Most new race engine was introduced at the big races in Europe
1973 the first V-6 both from OMC and Merc in Paris
1975 the first V-6 2 liter looper from OMC in Cardiff, UK
1979 Merc came to Bristol, UK with the first T4 for the OZ class.
1981 OMC introduced the 3.5 liter V8 for the OZ class in Brodenback, Germany
I was at all does races and did see it with my own eyes.
OMC hired me 1975 to be a factory OE/F3 driver and later a F1-V8 driver.
Many good and fun memories.
Thank you
No a sleeved down 2.4 liter cross-flow production V6 to 2 liter could not keep up with the later Merc 2 liter V6.
The 2 liter looper V6 took care of the Merc.
I raced a 2 liter V-6 looper in Italy 1978 for team Saffa.
Well..the first OMC V6 looper production engine came 1986. In the beginning 2.7 liter and 1988 3 liter.
My comments were about the 2 motors raced in '73 Paris. They were the same dimensions as the V-4 with the bore reduced for 2l. The reeds were horizontal like a V- 4 with 3 - 2 barrel carbs.I don't believe the 2l cross ever went into production as the first OMC V-6 production motor was the 2.4; a V-4 with 2 more cylinders. The loopers came about after I left.
The production V4 90 degree 2 liter looper, production V6 90 degree 3 liter looper and the production V8 90 degree 4 liter looper are using the same pistons and rods.
Started 1985 and the 2,3 and 4 liter came 1988.
The 4 liter production V8 looper was a completely different engine from the F1-V8 race engine.
Not one part was the same.

Rotary John,
You did plenty of work for OMC and the Rotary development.
I don't think any outboard can beat the world attention the Rotary race engine gave OMC.
To bad Mercury stopped the OZ class in Paris 1974..
Well a special experimental class made us see them race that year in Paris.
Later when Merc came out with the T4 1979 suddenly the OZ class was a good thing again in Paris.
Again thanks for all your work Rotary John.

Most of the cross-flow blocks where similar. Front half of the block and exhaust manifold was race special. Pretty boring stuff.
OMC introduced the 3 cylinder 1968 and it was a looper. Also a race model and probebly the most successful race engine ever 20 years later.
Lars: Did a V-8 ever run the Paris race?
No, Mercury stopped the OZ class racing again in Paris 6 hours when OMC released the V8.
We raced F1-V8 ones (1984) at a different place in Paris and not a enduro race.
I wrote this story about the Paris 6 hour race a year ago.
In my opinion the famous Paris 6 Hour race died already 1981.

These pictures are too good not to enlarge. These are for Jackie, whose deep devotion to the rotary has been never ending...

Nice, thank you Bob V
First picture-Jimbo, first lap, 1st place, Parker 1973. Second picture Mouse (Harold) Wade rt. and Mike Kuala set up the boat for Provo 1973. Adapted V-4 14/23 gear case to the rotary for the first time.. Unfortunately Mike died 1974-Lukemia.
Jim:
You need to go over to Scream and Fly site and set the record straight on v_6 history. I know you are an old fart like me, but history needs to be accurate
