New Product:  The JSRE Formula 1/Drag Racer Flywheel
By Greg Terzian

We’ve all heard people talking about them, but should we invest in a lightweight flywheel? Yes, they look really cool, but there’s more to it than looks – a lot more.

The standard steel V6 Mercury flywheel weighs in at over nine pounds. That’s a lot of weight on the top of your crankshaft, so the racers and high performance crowd usually opt for the Mercury aluminum flywheels that are standard equipment on high performance engines. These units weigh in at 6.6 pounds, and can withstand the high-RPM abuse of a high performance engine.

Left:  4.9 pounds, and race ready.
Right:
Detail of cutting and polishing work.

What is the benefit of lightweight flywheel?  Less weight on the top of your crankshaft means less stress on the bearings and crankshaft itself.  Additionally, a lighter flywheel will allow the engine to gain RPM quicker.  Although peak horsepower will essentially remain the same, the engine equipped with the lighter flywheel will achieve its maximum RPM quicker.  Better acceleration and increased engine life?  I’m sold to that idea.

While many people have realized that even the Mercury aluminum flywheel can stand some machining to reduce even more weight, it’s a tricky process handled only by a true professional.  Special machinery is required, and the flywheel must be balanced to 12,000+ RPM.  A precisely balanced flywheel is crucial for engine reliability, performance, and operator safety. In addition to that, it must remain strong and rigid.  Just any design won’t do, as a faulty design could cause the flywheel to break apart, possibly causing serious injury.

Jay Smith Racing Engines introduced us to their standard lightweight modified flywheel several years ago, and it’s been a favorite among members of our high performance boating community.  It weighed in at about 5.5 pounds. I’ve seen this unit up close, and the machine work was impeccable – a product of a true craftsman.  We also don’t mind the high performance look of a custom cut and polished flywheel!

JSRE raises the bar again with their new Drag Race and Formula 1 flywheel.  This unit incorporates a new design to the machine work, which allowed an unprecedented final weight of 4.9 pounds.  It’s electronically balanced and super strong.  The additional openings in the top will also help keep the stator windings cooler, possibly increasing durability.  This particular unit is to be used by Formula 1 driver, Terry Rinker, however, anyone can purchase this flywheel at JSRE for $500 plus your core and shipping.  The Lake Racer flywheel is still available at $400 plus your core and shipping.
