The
Outboard Drag Boat Association 2003 World Championships
at Jasper, Tennessee,
presented by the
Outdoor Channel was another success, with fast boats
and serious competition on the lake.
This year's race event saw a record attendance of over 150 registered race
boats competing on the liquid quarter mile to win their class. Many
classes ran through the eliminations - so many boats were present that race
activities had to extend a third day into Monday. Although the threat
of rain loomed overhead for most of Saturday, mother nature allowed the
races to go on, and Sunday's weather was sunny and dry - perfect for fast
quarter-mile action!
To make a great race better, there were no injuries. Although Ron Hausemann
caught a little too much air in his Triad and blew over, the race fans
cheered as he triumphantly opened his capsule and declared himself
uninjured.

Serious racing and serious partying - that's what this event is all
about. Here Mike Bates and Ronnie Holzmacher tune a Mercury 2.5 V6
throughout the late night hours. |
Racing isn't
what Jasper is all about. On Friday, a river run on the Tennessee
River was organized by Rodney Nance, and several boaters attend Jasper from
this website and others for the Tennessee River Run alone. Mixing
pleasure boating with professional racing proves to be a winning combination
for this event.
The Jasper event can be described as a total experience, allowing the race
fans to interact with racers as they prepare to run in their class - a
luxury not present in any other motorsport of this magnitude. After
the races, an awards banquet near the race site gives fans and racers a
final debriefing of the weekend's events, as well as a chance to socialize
and strengthen the bond that racers share.
