Mercury Pro Max Charging
Question
Jay,
I have a
Mercury 1998 225 Pro Max with a 16 amp stator.
The engine will start from cold, however
after several hours of use, the engine will not start when hot. The
engine turns over, but wont fire up. Do you know if this engine should
have the 40 amp stator? I suspect this is the culprit, since the
engine is unable to keep the battery charged throughout the day. This
is of special concern since my boat is equipped with a hydraulic lift plate
and various other instruments. Could the problem be my charging
system?
Kind

Ross
Ross,
All Mercury 225 horsepower Pro Max engines came equipped with a 40 amp
stator. The 16 amp units were used only in the high performance race
engines, such as the 260 horsepower EFI, so yours leads me to believe that
it must have been retrofitted. It would cost a great deal to convert your
Pro Max back to the 40 amp charging system; however a much less expensive
option would be to run two batteries. I would consider that option before I
spent the money to go to the 40 amp conversion. At the end of the day or
when starting became difficult, simply switch to the fresh battery, or, you
can wire the batteries in parallel, which would effectively double their
capacity while keeping the 12 volt output. This is not an ideal solution,
but much less expensive than the alternative.
