Thanks to Instigator (Gary W) for finding this one for me and ModVP (Tom H) for bringing it to Jasper today. Notice Gary's cute little touch of posing it in front of an OMC poster announcing a win by them.:p

That looks VERY clean. Way to go guys - that's what this forum is all about.

Another one. Notice the original MC1 Speedmaster. Except for the wrong plug wires hanging out across the exhaust log I haven't found anything that's not original on the engine, and it supposedly runs also.

Very true. Without this forum I wouldn't have met Gary, so obviously wouldn't have found this motor (as well as several others). I'm like a kid with a new toy tonight. I can't wait to get it on a stand tomorrow and do a compression/leakdown test. Hell, I might even break my brand new BALT (big assed leakdown tester) out for the occasion.

I'll give it a test. hook it on the back of the action and we'll see how she runs on some sunoco 110 and alisyn. :D

I'm gonna find something to hang it on and see if it runs right.

RM that is identical to the one that sits in Shorts Marine parts department. The one at shorts is brand new never run. They will not part with it I have asked everytime I walk in for parts they just say no before I speak now. Rick

It'd be unbelievable to find one that hasn't been run. My red striped one was bought for a pleasure boat and the daughter of the guy I got it from said less than 5 hrs, so I've always said it's probably the nicest on the planet, but an unrun one would be incredible to go with it. I just hope if it ever comes up for sale I can get it bought before Kim hears about it.

One thing I just noticed about this particular engine is that somebody has had a big propshaft put in the MC1, so I don't have a blade for it. Incredibly the previous owner had tried to run it with an aluminum through hub on that gearcase. I've got a couple of other MC1's, and of course SSM's also, so the gearcase/prop problem won't stop me from seein' it spit blue smoke if it's willing.

Apparently when Don Shorts was alive he is now deceased, he bought every race engine merc made and one more the one more was his to museum and his collection is vast. Years ago I was offered a job and there is a room above the shop full of these engines. Now that the son is running the dealership I hope for him to put these engines out for sale. You will be the first one just dont tell Dave S. Rick

I've never seen one that I don't want, BUT................. my son will be sellin' all my old stuff cheap when I die.:( He doesn't care anything about the old cars and hates the old boat stuff sittin' around everywhere. When he came to the new lakehouse the other day and saw the champ motor proudly displayed in the game room he said, "there's another you might be a redneck if....................... you have outboard motors in the house":( :( If only one makes you a redneck, I wonder what the other 15 or so that are goin' in there when I get the room finished makes me.:D

Norris, awhile back I seem to remember you saying that an engine stand can make a good outboard motor stand. How did you mount the engine supporting 2x6.? I priced out a Kerr stand that Mercury uses and they are talking 425.00. I don't want to spend that much to support my 300. Thanks, Frank

Forgot about that. My girlfriend is going to hate when I convert her Nissan engine stand into an outboard stand:D

Hi Frank. First of all you've got to buy an engine stand that the center upright is reversible on so you can get the angle similar to a transom. I used 2 X 12 blocks on mine. I even have one that has an X115 OMC and T2 Merc on the same stand on a piece of 2 X 12 about 33 inches long. One of the stands that I bought somewhere had arms for the back of the block that would work just bolted to an industry std. bolt pattern, so there was no wood required, but they won't all do that.

I have a Merc Twister that was mechanically restored before I got it and it was sealed ever since, until I went in to do the overhaul only to find it had new guts from powerhead to gearcase. Turns out the previous owner could not pay the repair bill so the marina kept the engine and now I have it. Just electronic wire replacement and decalling left and she is complete and runable. I am looking at selling her upon completion and have several interested people wanting her already, it was just a dream that she would have new internals to surprise us all. At least now I can see some pictures to guide me the rest of the way decal wise. :)

I have a NOS (new old stock) set of Twister 1 stickers, but it's the only set I've ever seen. It's so far still been impossible to get correct reproductions done of old stickers, although with today's computer technology you'd think it'd be a simple thing to do em. You're gonna have a real battle doing anything even remotely close to correct for it sticker wise. If the ones on it are even legible I'd probably leave em for now.

Sure I have some older picts of when I was putting her sections back together but they were with a Polaroid and now I am into digital photos but why take any until she is whole and decaled? I can though just for you and post them on here for everyone else.
