can any one tell me what year this merc 200 is? It's a canadian serial number 1998001. The cowl is the red stripe. Which seems to make it a 68-71 or so.
What year did Merc put Thunderbolt ignition on the smaller engines? Where are the coils on these engines? I'll puts some pitcures later tonight.

The coils are under the flywheel. You need only follow the spark plug wire to find them. My serial number listing is only for US made Mercs, so it looks like you are going to have to find some one with the Canadian list.

Hey George, where are ya?

For answers to questions like this on fishing motors, www.aomci.org is probably a better bet ;)

Thanks Sam,I thought they were under the fw, but somehow I thought it would have had thunderbolt ignition, about 5 years too early I guess. Always liked this engine but never had one. Now I've got a something a quickie to tinker with. Nice looking carb on this engine, looks bigger than my 20H.

Serial # is a 1967 but the decals look like 1969. Could have had the cowls swaped at some point...but that it is in that neighborhood.

thats what I thought- Just wondering if the Canadian Serial numbers are different. Looked like the original lower cowl, but a transplant is possible if not probable. Just have to figure out whats wrong with it now. It does have the 2 chevrons on the lower cowl handle which I know the 67 had but unsure if the 69 did.

Turns over, carb looks good. gotta pop the lowerunit and flywheel and see what horrors await me. Doesn't look like gear shift works, seems to be locked in forward as far as I can tell.

those decals are a 1969
If it has red chevrons it is a 1968
Silver stripes were on the 1967

The whole ignition is under the flywheel on that thing. Its a pretty good unit. Actually I swaped powerheads on my 1969 for a 1976 and its completely different ignition wise so if you need an ignition or parts for the top end I have them.

Chevrons are silver, and the carb is a ka22b which clinches it as a 67 merc. The engine had been sitting for years I suspect. The plugs had very nice rust cover (but looked good on the gaps- no sign of rust).

Goota pop the flywheel-if I can dig out my old homemade puller- hope the pattern fits one for a mk25.

Now to figure out what I am missing- going to a bone yard tommorrow and look among the weed covered piles in which lie a few 60's mercs. Never know what you will find. Go
