I am new to outboard stuff. I am a jet boat guy who has aquired an '72 G3 Glasspar Larson in need of a major resto.
I would like to run a Mercury with approx 85 - 115 horsepower . What are the years to stay away from? Why? What RPM are the motors capable of in stock trim? Also i like the way the exhaust is done in the old racing pics were they come out of the hood with like a cone type pipe for each cylinder. Is this practicle on a lake boat or will it be ear bleeding loud?? Is there any video clips i can download with this open exhaust somewere? Thanks Ant

You'd have a hard time finding a stacker of any model and no they are not good for a lake boat. I would be looking for any of the ADI ignition inline 6 motors from Mercury, early to late 80's. They look to the untrained eye like period motors with the advantage of readily available parts, cheap to run and maintain, and buy. The 85 hp would be a 4 cylinder model.

What is a 1973 G3 Glaspar Larson? The last Glaspar G-3 I saw was built in 64 or 65. There was a "Super G" , a larger boat, that hung around a while after that. By the way...anything over 65 horsepower is wasted on the 13'6" G3.

The G3 was built until '77. Larson took over Glasspar i think in '66. Very little changes over the year.

The Larson G3 doesn't have the center deck like the original Glaspar G3. Other wise very similar.

My old man had one with an 85 I4, and it moved. We rebuilt another one and put a V4 OMC 100 on it, a little faster. You could put an inline 6 on it and still be safe. The Larson is WIDE, and putting even a 150 I6 merc on it would work. That is a fun hull. You dont have to worry about any side-to-side crap, and it jumps wakes well.
