That unit looks the same as the first one they put on the carb motor in 69. It had small driveshaft 4 spline. The super strangler used driveshaft with larger dia. and lots more splines. There is another large unit with nosecone on it that came on them. I have all 3 of them must of been a large and small shaft 1:1?

Hey Beaver, long time no talk to....mid 80s, correct?

I have all of them too. I'm pretty sure the clubfoot came two ways, and the short course (1:1) only one way. The 1:1 came without an "extended nose" (blunt strut, just like the photos show). The clubfoot came with a blunt strut as it did with the Starflite then Strangler, and was carried over to the Super Strangler in early "production". The later Super Stranglers had a slight protrusion on the bullet forward of the strut, as a "nosecone".

Hey Guy, How about posting some pictures of your Stranglers? :)

I see I was given credit for the originals which isn't accurate. But I did download and save these before the links went FUBAR. If they don't get fixed, I will upload them later tonight.

Sorry Barry they are a collection of parts at present, but I will be putting two together from the remains of four that I have, they are the diaphram carby type one with a very small quickfoot and one with the slightly larger unit that takes the larger propeller. Cant wait to get them running, even if it is just for the sound. Do you have any pictures of your motors?

The Super Strangler or Stinger GP (Johnson equivalent) are at the top of my want list, alongside the CCC/RS. If one of em gets sold around here without me gettin' a shot I'll be sendin' a hit man after both the buyer and seller.

The spec. sheet says 2 barrels "PER" cylinder/eight barrels? is this a typo
or correct. If it is 8 barrels I would love to see a pic.

Both the Stinger GP (Johnson) and Super Strangler were 8 barrels. The Stinger GP was frequently referred to as 8 barrel Stinger. The previous year Stinger and Strangler had 4 carb venturi. These are 4 cyl engines, not to be confused with the later 3 cyl's with the Stinger designation, which were production engines. The early 4 cyl Stingers and Stranglers were factory race engines, designed to compete with the various Merc Twisters of the same timeframe.

If you do a search on posts by Hydro-Cat, he has a restored Shultz tunnel with an 8 barrel stinger. Here's one of the threads but I know there are better pictures somewhere else: (scan the whole page below and looke for both pics)

Oh no these are Everrudes. The old race cases came as club foots. You could buy a bolt that went up front that had a point and blend it in for that pointy race look. :) The parts were cheeper for these units than stock fissin stuff to help the racers back then. Don't ya wish they did that these days. :(

I missed out on an old k model rude a few years back. It was listed in the trader as "old race motor in parts". I called but it was sold right away! Funny thing is a few months later, I sold an old 17' Duo mystery tunnel I had. I delivered it to the guy and there in his garage was the motor from the trader. It was in good shape and complete!!. He only gave a couple hundred bucks for it. Scary thing was, he was going to put it on the Duo!

mac19f said, "I picked up a complete KC13R engine and got a spare KR15M (Stinger) powerhead and gearcase."

Actually, the model name of the Model KC-13R is "Stinger" and the model name of the Model KR-15M is "Stinger GP". They are both 99 cubic inch V-4 factory race engines. As stated earlier in the thread, the Model KR-15M was the 8 carb engine.

The "Stinger GP" was the latest Racing V-4 before OMC went to the larger race engines: the Rotary Combustion (Wankel) Race Engine and the Racing V-6.

That clears up a little confusion I had. I've got a few more questions if you don't mind.

1. Were the tower housings the same on the KC13R and KR15M? The exhaust tuner looks the same and looks like the powerheads would swap but were they originally the same tower other than the transom brackets?

2. The engines I have are both Johnsons. Seems like I remember there was an Evinrude equivalent. Did the Evinrudes have a different model number?

mac19f asked: 1. Were the tower housings the same on the KC13R and KR15M? The exhaust tuner looks the same and looks like the powerheads would swap but were they originally the same tower other than the transom brackets?

The powerheads of both the model KC-13R and the model KR-15M do not attach directly to the tower housing. There is an adapter in between the powerhead and the tower housing on both models. The adapter is the same for both models.

The tower housing is not the same between the two models, and I am not sure as what all the differences are.

The Stinger GP, Model KR-15M, has a feature of power vertical lift (up and down) that is built into the swivel. The travel is one inch. The tower housing has a boss built into the bottom front for attaching the vertical lift indicator. The Stinger, Model KC-13R, does not have this feature.

The megaphone is not the same between the two models, and I am not sure what the differences are.

Greg, I don't know my numbers as far as KC13R, etc, but the Evinrude equivalent to the Stinger was the Strangler (both 4V) and the Stinger GP was the Super Strangler (both 8V)

I looked up the OMC model numbers for the 1968 racers

same model numbers for Evinrudes and Johnsons, probably continued to use the same numbers

Is there an other Johnson/Evinrude sst 100 engine made also ?
What do you want for the lowerunit ?
I want to put a Super Strangler on a simular boat as the red one,its a Dalla Pieta copy , a 60s design.

Kim, Would appreciate if you could shed a little light on your Super Strangler. There is an identification plate on the port side (left facing forward) of the swivel bracket that is visible in your first photo:

1) What is the model number that is stamped on this ID Plate???

2) There are three lines of information that are printed on the ID Plate below the serial number. What is printed on these three lines???

Thanks for your help!
