I do have to editorialize on his claim a bit .... El Soriano is hardly the "most famous outboard engine of all times"

Perhaps in a few hundred years, but certainly not now

Great find Sam!!! They do not have a pic of the motor with the 4 foot long gearcase!! How did they manage to extend the prop back that far?

I don't know whether there is a series of shafts and steps or a single shaft running at an angle. The 4 ft long lower unit was a Dupuy change. Looks like an angle drive to me:

What is the difference between the lesco and soriano motors? Looks like the lesco has the supercharger?

Sorianos were opposed 6's entirely custom made. The LESCO was an opposed 4 and might have had a Cisatalia car crankshaft & crankcase. There were probably a few dozen Sorianos made between WWI and WWII, but only one LESCO.

All of these motors were 4 stroke supercharged motors. LESCO was the name of the DiPriolo family business that made heavy industrial tools, lathes, milling machines etc. Carl Kiekhaefer even bought LESCO tools to make Mercs.

The DiPriolo's were able to purchase a number of the Soriano motors, spare parts and tooling after WWII and raced them in Italy. With a later type Dupuy/Soriano they were able to increase the world outboard speed record to 83 mph using a Soriano motor on a Molinari built super sized Swift Big D. But that was as much as they could get from the old 6 cylinder. So, they built their own powerhead .... a 4 cylinder overhead cam motor with a better supercharger and carb than had been used on the Soriano motors and another boat more suited to the heavy motors.

Late in 1954 they set the first outboard speed record over 100 mph; years before the first Merc went over 100 mph.

A few years later they tried to make a comeback with the LESCO engine on a laydown capsule hydro, but couldn't beat the Merc and OMC records of 1960.

Something in my brain just clicked .... Spanish OSSA .... this is the same company famous for the OSSA MX motorcycles of the 1960's &1970's.

Cool story, Olegator!

Here is an OSSA built Soriano 4 from the OSSA site:

Their server is slow and the screen size of the image is big, but the file size is not that bighttp://ossa.2y.net/ossa/soriano/sorianomotor.jpg

Their server is painfully slow and the files are pretty big, but the information is rare. Some days I can't get in touch with this server at all, other days it takes a few tries to get any of the files downloaded.

A few new pictures have been added to the first website at the top: www.soriano-outboard.com
